Astronomy Unites World
During 2009, people from 136 nations around the globe will be celebrating the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009). The worldwide event marks the first 400 years of modern astronomy, which began in 1609 when Galileo first used the telescope to observe the heavens.
The theme for IYA2009 is “The Universe, Yours to Discover.” Organizers hope to encourage citizens, especially the younger generations, to learn more about the universe. Goals of IYA2009 include improving scientific awareness and education, promoting access to knowledge and astronomical observing opportunities, preserving dark skies, empowering communities in developing countries, and encouraging more women and minorities to enter the field of science.
Numerous regional, national, and global events will be part of the celebration marking astronomy’s contributions to culture and society. Professionals from all over the world will blog about what it’s like to be an astronomer. Star hunts will allow people to count visible stars in the night sky, drawing attention to the problem of light pollution. Millions will be encouraged to take their first look at the stars and planets through a telescope.
This year-long global celebration of astronomy is sponsored by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) who view astronomy as a way to unite citizens from all across the planet.
