What are Ember Days?

emberEmber Days go way back in the church calendar. They are holy days set aside for fasting and prayer. Their origin is uncertain however, “Ember,” is derived from the Latin Quatuor Temporum, meaning the “Four Times” or “Four Seasons.”

There are four sets of Ember Days, and each include Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The spring Ember Days, or Lenten Embertide, are observed on the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the first Sunday in Lent (February 13, 15, 16 2008).

The summer, or Whit Embertide (named after Whitsunday, the Feast of Pentecost) is celebrated annually after Whitsunday, this year on May 14, 16, and 17.

September brings the autumn, or Michaelmas Ember Days celebrated annually after the Exaltation of the Cross, this year onSeptember 17, 19, 20.

And the winter or Advent Embertide, are celebrated on the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday after St. Lucy’s Day on December 17, 19, 20.
