6 Weird Uses for the Farmers' Almanac

The Farmers’ Almanac is well known for its long–range weather forecasts. Often referred to as a bride’s best friend, we receive many calls for wedding weather forecasts. The Farmers’ Almanac also contains valuable gardening, fishing, and astronomical information as well as helpful hints and favorite recipes. But there are some more unique or weird uses for the Farmers’ Almanac that you may not have considered.

Potty Train: Did you know that according to Farmers’ Almanac tradition and moon lore, there are better times to potty train your children? There are! We had so many people asking us for the “best times to potty train” we’ve now added it to our Best Days Calendar in the Farmers’ Almanac.

Best Place to Retire: While we’ve been known to highlight cities with the best/worst weather, some consult the Farmers’ Almanac to pick the best town to retire.

Tornado Chasers: We’ve been contacted by people who want to find, chase, and live where tornadoes happen often.

Pest Control: From deer in the garden to squirrels in the attic, people consult the Farmers’ Almanac for ways to rid their homes and gardens of critters that don’t belong there.

Best Day to Castrate Bull: For the bull it may not be ever, however, this question is one of our most popular. According to our Best Days calendar, which looks at what zodiac signs the moon is in, there are better days to castrate. According to many, if you follow moon lore and our best days calendar, healing and bleeding will be less if you castrate on suggested dates.

Fire Starter: Some years ago, a resident of upstate NY wrote to ask for a new copy of the Farmers’ Almanac. It seems he had to replace his copy which had been used to unlock his frozen car door. The story goes that it had been a particularly icy storm, and his car door was locked, and he couldn't get his key in to unlock it. So, in desperation he lit the Almanac to heat the lock in order to escape the numbing cold.
