Stop and Smell the Roses!
“Burning the candle at both ends is not very bright.” – Rick Warren
April is Stress Awareness Month, and if you recently finished doing your taxes, perhaps you understand why!
Getting bogged down by stress is not only bad for your quality of life, but it’s also dangerous for your health. Now that spring is in full swing, here are a few tips to help you to remember to stop and smell the roses.
• Take a day off – Not too long ago, many businesses were closed on weekends. With the pace of the world quickening every day, make sure you set aside at least one day each week for relaxing with family, friends, or to make some private time for a favorite hobby.
• Unplug – Computers and other technology can certainly make life more convenient, and it’s fun catching up with old friends and learning new things online. But the time we spend with technology has a way of creeping into time we’d rather use for other things. Make a schedule for yourself, detailing when you will and won’t use technology, and stick to it!
• Take a break – When you have a lot to accomplish, taking time off may seem irresponsible. But quick breaks to exercise, nap, meditate, garden, socialize, or any other relaxing activity you enjoy can recharge your batteries so that, when you do get back to work, you’re more productive.
• No time for a break? Take a breath – Even in the midst of your busiest days, you can always find small pockets of relaxation. Make sure to pause at least once every couple of hours and focus your attention on your breath. It only takes a few seconds, but can go a long way in tackling stress.
• Pay attention to your body – Many of us never pay attention to the signals our bodies send us. You may not think you’re under a lot of stress, but if you experience headaches, tiredness, upset stomachs, or stiff muscles, it could mean your body is sending you a message. Take care of these issues, instead of trying to “tough it out.”
• Learn to say “no” – There are only so many hours in the day. Prioritize your activities, and don’t take on more than you can reasonably handle. Delegate responsibilities to others when possible. Limiting your obligations will not only make you feel better, it will help you do your best on those tasks you do accept.
