Weekly Wisdom

Thought for the week:
It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.

Timely Advice:
Repel Moths with Herbs
Place dried rosemary and mint in pieces of netting or old stockings tied closed among your clothes in closets and drawers. This should dissuade moths from coming near your wardrobe.

Hints for the Cook:
What are Cloves?
Cloves are the dried, unopened, nail-shaped flower buds of the evergreen, Syzygium aromaticum. Cloves are usually reddish-brown in color and have a strong flavor and aroma. While cloves are often used in dessert and meat recipes, they are also used in the making of ketchup and Worcestershire sauce. Most cloves come from Indonesia, and can be bought whole or ground. Cloves are used a lot during the fall. For more recipes and information on ways to cook with spices, check our Busy Cook's Guide to Spices in our store.

Indoor Gardening Trick:
Coffee filters work well to keep the soil from seeping out of pots when watered. Simply place the filter on the bottom of the pot and add the soil on top.

Question of the week:
Where Do Insects Go in the Winter?
When temperatures cool down, crickets scurry to little underground nests where they sleep or hibernate all winter long. Orange and black monarch butterflies migrate to warmer countries when autumn weather grows colder, as do ladybugs. Ants take after people. They lock themselves in their homes most of the time and come out on sunny, warm days.

Most adult insects die at the end of summer, but they leave a large number of eggs behind. In the spring, the eggs hatch and the process starts again.
