Cooking Outside the Bread Box

With a little creativity you can take ordinary bread products and serve them in non-traditional ways that spell delicious!

Hot Dog Buns make great garlic bread sticks. Separate the tops from the bottoms. Set on a baking tray. Spread butter on the inside of each slice. Sprinkle with garlic salt and place under the broiler until golden.

Bagels, especially those with bits of tomato or onion baked in the bread make great mini pizzas. Separate the bagels and place on a baking tray. Spread spaghetti sauce on top of each slice. Add sliced pepperoni, olives and shredded mozzarella cheese on top. Bake in the oven at 325°F. until cheese melts.

French Bread also makes a great pizza. Cut a loaf of French bread in half, place on baking tray, soft side up and follow the same directions as when making bagel pizzas.

Pita Pockets make great pouches for scrambled eggs with ground sausage or crumbled bacon or whatever you like scrambled up for breakfast.

Pizza dough also serves as the perfect base for great fruit desserts. I’ve tasted one with apple pie filling and sliced apples on top and another with a cream cheese spread and fresh, sliced fruits layered on top.
I don’t have any recipes for fruit pizzas and would love a few. So, if you have a recipe for a delicious fruit pizza, would you please post it here?

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
