Famous American Farming Quotes

Do you know what famous Americans made these following quotes? I’ll give you two clues for each. Both were taken from written letters. Clues for the first quote, it was written by a lady in the early 1900’s and a gentleman wrote the second quote in 1811.

Who said, “Farm women have always been wage earners and partners in their husband’s businesses, but no one ever noticed it.”

Who said, “ I have often thought that if heaven had given me choice of my position and calling, it should have been on a rich spot of earth, well watered, and near a good market for the productions of the garden. No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of a garden. Such a variety of subjects, some one always coming to perfection, the failure of one thing repaired by the success of another, and instead of one harvest a continued one through the year. Under a total want of demand except for our table, I am still devoted to the garden.”

Was it Eleanor Roosevelt?

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
