Let the Games Begin

Labor Day can be a lazy rewarding day of rest for the diligent working class. And so it should be. But when a few other friends or families gather together, a little friendly competition always seems to stir a few folks out of the lounge chairs to participate. Children can enjoy old-fashioned games like wheelbarrow races, three-legged races, and sack races. What fun activities and games do you have planned for the day? Whether you enjoy a just-for-fun horseshoe tournament, target shooting or rock skipping contests, we want to hear what fun games and competitions you might be joining in today, while the steaks are grilling and the beverages are chilling!

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
