Do You Know Any Indian State Names?

Many states and towns in America were named after places or royalty in England while others come from Spanish words. However, many states and cities in this country also come from Native American (Indian) words. Let’s see if you can match the states’ name to its Indian meaning. If you know where these Native American nations lived, it will help you match these.

Michigan	means “land of the Indians.”

Minnesota	Algonquin Indian word meaning, “at the big hill.”

Indiana Chippewa Indian words meaning, “great water.”

Massachusetts	Sioux Indian meaning, “cloudy water” or “sky-tinted water”

There are many more states and cities with Indian origins.
Do you live in a city or state that comes from an Indian word?
Like Natchez, Mississippi or Cherokee, North Carolina? If so, post it below.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
