A “Storm of the Century” in Colorado?

What I like about editing the Farmers’ Almanac, and what sometimes scares me is what people believe because they were told it was in the Farmers’ Almanac. Being told and being in the publication can be two different things. We do predict weather two years in advance and have received much credit over the years. A couple weeks ago I was asked about a major snowstorm that was going to hit Colorado – maybe 30 inches and possibly the “Storm of the Century.” This week I am getting more inquiries – read below:

There is a rumor going around CO right now that we are expecting the storm of the century. I have heard estimates as high as 55 inches. When I ask where people get this information they say the Farmers’ Almanac. Is there any truth to these rumors? Can we expect another spring storm like 2003?

What started as 30 inches has snowballed into as much as 55 inches! Trust me if I knew about a “storm of the century”, I’d be sharing it with you, on 60 Minutes and in the pages of the almanac. It is easy enough to read what we say in zone 4… but alas no monster storm according to us. Or, at least not this year.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
