Hurriane Names for 2008

Technorati Tags:
Hurricane Names, Tropical Storms

Since 1953, tropical storms and hurricanes have been given names. For many years the names were female. Today, we alternate between male and female names listed alphabetically and in chronological order starting with A and omitting Q and U.. Each season (June through November) 21 names are assigned . If more are required, NOAA dips into the Greek alphabet as it did a couple years ago. If a hurricane does tremendous damage (ie Andrew, Camille, Katrina), the name is retired and will never make a future list.

Here is the 2008 listing:

Arthur Hanna Omar
Bertha Ike Paloma
Cristobal Josephine Rene
Dolly Kyle Sally
Edouard Laura Teddy
Fay Marco Vicky
Gustav Nana Wilfred

Check Arthur off the list. It was a tropical storm that never quite developed into a threat.  NOAA is calling for an active hurricane season. The Farmers’ Almanac identifies 3 hurricane threats which I discussed in an earlier blog. Last year the expectation was high and few storms developed. So, Stay tuned.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
