2008 – 2009 Winter Weather, Hurricane Fey, Signs of Winter
Today, the Associated Press is reporting on the release of the 2009 Farmers’ Almanac. We are in stores and during the next few weeks, Sandi Duncan, Philom. and I will be on news and talk shows in the US and Canada. Once you get your copy of the new edition, I welcome any feedback. What is your overall impression of the new edition? What do you like best and what would you like to see in future editions.
Hurricane Fey has just enjoyed its 15 minutes or days of fame. In the 2008 Farmers’ Almanac, on page 107, we wrote: “We expect an active tropical season in 2008, with the Gulf Coast directly in the crosshairs for hurricanes in mid-July, mid-August, and mid-September. The associated tropical moisture from such systems is likely to flow northward, creating a threat of excessive rainfall over many eastern locations.”
Finally, as the news of a colder winter hits the newsstands, here is a comment from Colorado about the upcoming winter.
I completely agree with your prediction about a colder winter approaching. We have seen the migration of birds much earlier this year here in Denver, Colorado. Eastern blue jays, which normally come through in later September, are here now. Pelicans flying south overhead. My husband and I commented on the unusual migration pattern last week thinking it indicated a colder winter. What plans can we make in Colorado other than to break out the snowboards and skis and get them ready for some great winter fun? Vikki.
What are you seeing in your backyard?? A future blog will feature my 20 Signs of a Hard Winter.

New York has been on and off with cold and warm and we have been getting a alot of snow i hope we get more
Hey i live in Pittsburgh PA an im lookin for some snow man. We need a blizzard soon, anybody know whats goin down this winter?
Great Tree, I’m glad you moved to Colorado from Texas, I just moved from Colorado to Texas. I lived in Ft. Collins for 4 years, don’t get your hopes up and picture a “White” Ft. Collins, you’ll still need to travel a little to enjoy a full time white winter. Good Luck………
I live in north west texas ( Amarillo ) and this is the first year in years that we have seen the return of the black catapillar. They are so thick this year. My grandfather would say when we were kids that winter would be rough if they came out in groves. Has anybody heard of this ??
See global warming has goten ride of one of central california’s seasons already lol JK: Buy the way who really knows what the weather will be like. I personally like the suspence, anticipation and ocational suprise. I do hope to see a little more snow than last year as it does do the underground aquifers some good. I do like snow i think its astetically pleasing. I to have noticed more ground hogs hummm. dont know but no scientific proff that means hard winter. I live in Tennessee
Here in Central California it was 87 today. That probably sounds great to some of you, but to me I hate it! I love the fall and we really don’t have much. It takes until Dec. to get really cool and it lasts through Jan. Then starts warming up again. We NEVER have four seasons. You are all very lucky!
I’m with you, Susie from Camden, AR. I’m from Arkansas but lived in Illinois for nearly 12 years and got used to their beautiful Winters…I’m longing for a bit of snow myself.
HI , I OWN ASNOW REMOVEAL COMPANY , AND WE ARE TRYINF TO SEE , 08 & 2009 FORSEEN PERSEY,
LAST YEAR WE HAD 10 . 3 ” TOTAL SNOW FALL IN THE NYC BRONX AREA.,
THANK YOU , LENNTY SALATI
Wondering what the forecast for our winter will be here in New Orleans. We sure would love to see some snow….We deserve it since we had to endure two more hurricanes this summer…
We are still in the high 70’s and lower 80’s here at the top of Texas. We haven’t had any winters of high precipitations or heavy snow in several years. Does anyone know if this weather pattern will continue for Texas or will the Old Man Winter come knocking on our doors this winter and bring us Lots of snow?
I live in Camden, Arkansas. Does anyone know if we will get to see a flake this winter????? Please say YES!
La-Nina is in a weak state right now. Last year most agreed with warmer than average temps due to the strengthening La-Nina, but this year it is weak. I can easily see a winter of 95-96. However, time will intensify how much we get or don’t get. It is very strange for something to change like this; last year was just crazy we had record breaking temps 75 degrees in NYC in the beginning of January.
There are multiple types of La-Nina’s seems like this one will bring negative NAO it all depends on time.
Blizzardd predictions can someone tell me if were getting major blizzards here in philadelphia.
Here in Penn’s woods (PA) the changes are quite obvious. As Vikki noticed, yes, the Eastern Blue Jays have migrated. I have not seen any Blue Jays since July! Also, there has been quite a showing of agressive wild turkey which doesn’t normally happen till the weather turns cool. As for a harsh winter, I am afraid it’s coming, but I don’t expect too much in precipitation. The continued dry air, in the Susquahanna Valley area, hasn’t changed for the past three years.
Can someone tell me if i’m getting a bad winter with major blizzards in philadelphia. I think i am getting a bad winter of snow with 50-60 inches of snow.
What’s funny is that I’ve noticed white oak’s leaves change from two-three weeks ago. Extremely unusual as they normally don’t change colors and drop until late October into November. Ominous perhaps?
Here in the mountains of NC our apple trees were loaded this year because an Easter freeze last year killed all the fruit buds. But we noticed that yellow jackets, hornets and solitary bees (look like bumble bees but smaller) were thick on the fallen apples, and then last week they all suddenly disappeared. We are mystified. We are organic farmers and do not use chemicals. Now the apple crop is coming in strong but all the bees have vanished. Our hummingbirds are still here, and the dogwood trees are turning early this year. We have a big crop of walnuts. Have no idea if any of these things predict a “bad” winter. We just want a lot of snow as it replenishes the underground aquifers.
Diane- I’m with you girl! After 21 years in FL, I moved back to Chicago last year for some cooler weather. And I got it! Lots of snow last winter and I’m hoping for the same this year. I’ll do my best to send some cold air your way – you’re right, that heat and humidity is a b!tch!!!
I noticed with interest the comment about the humming birds arriving in larger numbers in Georgia. My humming birds just totally dissapeared about a month and a half ago from our feeder on our deck here on the North Oregon coast. It had been frequented by several birds and now they have totally gone. We have had georgous sunny days but very chilly mornings with that fall snap in the air starting at the end of August.
It’s been very warm for the first week of September. So I don’t know if we are going to get a cold snowy winter like everyone’s talking about. It’s probably gonna be the same as last year, since temperatures don’t seem to be cooling any time soon. There are multiple factors like ocean circulations that will contribute to our weather and jet stream. Last year we had a few shots of cold air in the East then it would die out. I’m located in New Jersey near NYC.
I’m in FL wish we was gonna get some cooler weather.. The heat and humidity is so bad… Someone send some cold air here please..LOL
I’m at 7500 feet near Ridgway, Colorado. Down at the river, the cottonwoods are turning, it seems early. Nights are cool and it feels like fall. I’ve lived 57 years in W. Colo. and this seems at least several weeks early.
the high here was 54 today in Ft. collins, CO. Sure is the sign of winter will be here in few weeks! Trees r changing pretty rapidly and some of leaves r falling.
I have noticed cooler-than normal temps in Nebraska as well as early migration. Lots of unusual weather patterns over the whole summer; very wet & cool compared to normal. I think this winter is going to be really, really bad.
HAS ANYONE HEARD ANY PREDICTIONS FOR THE COAST OF WASHINGTON STATE? I AM STARTING TO NOTICE SOME LEAVES CHANGE COLOR, AND THIS IS EARLY, SO IT MAKES ME WONDER IF WE WILL HAVE A COLD WINTER
its very cool, dry and sunny here in colorado….it feels really good!
i’m soo ready for fall and winter to come!
I live in Louisville Ky. I have two huge holly trees in my fron yard. They are very attractive, and I love just looking at them and all the birds, squirrels and rabbits that use the trees. This year the tree is so loaded down with the green berries that the limbs are dragging on the ground. Is this common, or is it letting us know it is going to be a hard winter?
Here in Southeast Kansas one weather lore is “We’ll receive a killing frost 6 weeks after the first strong north wind in August”! We’ve had our strong August north wind and it predicts a killing frost the last week of September which will be about 2 weeks ahead of normal.
Here in Kentucky I have noticed leaves changing very early, and there is also old folk tales about acorns. It states that if acorns are plentiful on white and red oaks, be prepared for a long snowy winter and the oaks are loaded. Pray for a great winter and when I say great, I mean LOTS of SNOW.
I’m checking in because I have noticed signs of an early Fall in Northwest Washington, unlike I’ve ever witnessed. What is going on?
I spent my summer in upstate new york (the adirondak mts) and we had some nights where the temperature dipped into the 30’s……not to mention the leaves are changing!! =) Can’t wait for winter!!
I live in central Georgia. I have noticed a sizable increase in the number of hummingbirds in our area as they prepare for their migration south. Usually, I think they are staggered coming thru, with no more than 2-3 eating at the neighbors feeder. This afternoon, there were 5 buzzing around and chasing each other off.
2 weeks ago, it snowed above 10,000 ft in the mountain and i can see it from my house in Fort Collins and it was rainy and cold in the 50s for 2 days. And there are several trees turning into fall colors and saw some birds migrating south. WE HAVE TO BE PREPARE FOR LONG COLD SNOWY WINTER IN COLORADO!!!!
I am Texas native and moved here in May 2008!
Here in North Texas, we are seeing migratory birds about 1.5 – 2 months earlier than normal.
A flock of geese was camped out in a stockpond close to our barn last week.
Very weird and different!
At the end of July I had 2 aspens turn gold and they have now shed their leaves. I live in the Divide CO area. Nights are getting quite cold and I too have seen the blue jays already. Does colder necessarily mean more snow?
