My husband and I live in a four storied building of condos in southeast DC. We live on the fourth floor...there on the wall the thickest and blackest caterpillar I've ever seen!!! YUCK!! I think the thing winked at me. As you can gather I think very little of creepy crawly creatures. Wives tale or Almanac I hope to not see it again. What you guys are saying is pull out the long johns because, this creature is an indicator that we will have bad weather?

What does direction have to do with it -- the caterpillar was crawling up the wall.

11/13/09 I live in Central Ohio and have seen a few woolly bears on my sidewalk and porch. They seem to be heading north. Their color a lot of orange , little black and not thick. Hope this means a mild winter since our summer was mild. Thanks!

Trick or treat? My mom went to pick up what she thought was a black boa feather from my halloween costume only to realize it was the big wooly mammoth of caterpillar's. My family got a good chuckle out of it, but I think she was a little distraught. She said it was black as night and headed south. BURRRR!!!!

I just saw a totally black huge wooly caterpillar in my carport in Norman, Oklahoma. It has been a gorgeous, warm fall day -- should I relocate Mr. Wooly from the concrete/brick carport to a place in my garden where he/she will find vegetation?
