Birth Control for Maple Trees
After a cold snap that dipped into Florida last week, the East Coast is getting a warm spell. So, for those who have experienced a frost, this may be your Indian Summer. Temps in the 50s and 60s after snow or frosts, is welcomed. My Indian Summer definition is 2 or more days above normal temperatures after the first frost. So enjoy the last “summer of the year”.
Then again, not everyone is having an Indian Summer. Did you catch the news today – parts of North Dakota are getting 12 inches of white stuff. When ice melts at the poles or in Alaska, it gets front page treatment. Today, buried in our local paper, mention was made that because of a rough winter and colder than normal summer, the ice caps in Alaska actually grew reversing a trend. Interesting. Is this the makings of an ice age?
Finally, here is an interesting question from Rebecca:
Is there such a thing as birth control for Maple trees? Usually our two trees drop seeds twice a year, Spring and Fall. This year they have dropped a bounty beyond belief. I would like to stop it from happening altogether if possible.
The only birth control I am aware of is a chain saw (only kidding). Anyone have a good answer. My maples only drop in the spring. Wouldn’t do much good for the seeds in the fall. Help??
