Sickness Bad – Cure Worse
I was asked by a reporter for some of the more unusual cures for the common cold and flu. Here is what I came up with based up remedies from past almanacs and other sources. In some cases, I think I’d rather suffer with the illness than experience the cure.
For a Cold
* take nine deep whiffs from a dirty sock.
* catch leaves, which fall from trees in the fall. (has something to do with being outdoors)
* bake an onion and pour the juice into a glass and drink .
* take one clove of garlic, crush and mix with warm milk. Drink and the life of the cold is shortened.
* Rub Vapo Rub on the bottom of your feet before going to bed (wear socks)
…ready for this one?
* put cow dung in water – bring to a boil. Gargle the water three times a day and your cough is gone. (if you try it and it works, let me know)
Other illnesses —– worst cures…. from the good old days
Stammering - smack the stammerer in the face with a piece of fresh liver.
Asthma - drink tea made by boiling a hornet’s nest.
Freckles - remove by washing in dew on the first day of May.
Goiter - pass a dead person’s hand across the throat.
Lumbago - drink tea made by boiling and old shoe.
Do you have an old remedy worth noting? If so, please share.
