Greatest Hints of My Time

Recently, I was asked about my favorite hints. I got  “millions of them”. These may or may not be the greatest hints of all time, but they are my personal  favorites:

Broken egg – if you drop an egg on the floor, cover it with salt, then sweep it up. There is no slimy mess.

Lost contacts – grab your vacuum and slip a nylon stocking over the hose. Secure with a rubber band. Fish around and you’ll find it quickly.

Onion tears - to prevent tears while cutting onions, place the onion in a freezer for 15 minutes. This will help minimize the strength of the onion and resulting tears. You can also slice onions under water to accomplish the same result.

Ants – get rid of ants by sprinkling powdered soap on in the area you see the critters. They bring the soap particles to their nest. Moisture expands the soap and destroys the homestead.

Twice the milk – if your family loves milk, buy a half gallon of 2% or whole milk. Then, add a half gallon of water. You’ll have twice the milk and great savings.

Coffee grinds – after brewing coffee, rather than tossing the grinds in the garbage, collect in a container and then place in your garden. They are a nice source of nutrients for plants.

Cats – keep cats off the couch buy rubbing a dryer sheet on the furniture.

Ink stains – spray with hairspray, let set, then wash as normal.

Soap – for longer lasting soap, remove bras of soap and allow to harden, they will last longer and lather just as well.

More ga$ – buy gas in the cooler hours of the morning or evening. There is  greater density and more volume for the money.

Deodorize – to fill the room with a pleasant smell, either put bars of used soap in a trash can or place several drops of  vanilla on a cotton ball and place in a trash bin or drawer. Both work well with little or no cost.

Smoke odor removal – this was big for me in the ’60s. To remove smoke smell, fill a large jar with vinegar and place a large oil wick inside the jar so the wick is half immersed in the vinegar and half exposed to the air. The wick will draw the odor form the air in the room into the vinegar where it will be neutralized.

Furniture dent in your carpet – Try placing an ice cube in the dent and let it melt. Then take a brush and bring the nap back up. Magic.

Stale chips – Try representing chips and crackers by putting them on a plate and microwave them for 30 – 45 seconds. Let stand one minute and they will be crispy again.

Broken glass – to remove broken glass form the kitchen floor, try using a piece of damp bread. Simply wipe the area with the bread and the slivers will be absorbed by it. Of course, toss the bread in the trash…. no fair tricking your brother or sister.

Disposal – to eliminate odors from your disposal, place pieces of orange or lemon in it and turn on.

Furniture scratches – mix a bit of coffee with a little water to make a paste. Then, rub the paste into the nicks and scratches of dark furniture. Works wonders.
