Happy 87th Birthday

Today is my mother’s 87th birthday. A naturally shy person, I twisted her arm to be in a segment of FATV devoted to her husband, Ray Geiger. She and my Dad co-owned the Almanac Publishing Company for decades and she had some unique observations to make. It took time, but she has long “forgiven” me for making her speak on camera. But, she still refuses to watch the piece. She’ll just never realize what a natural she is for television.

As vibrant as my Dad was, he was nothing without  Ann Geiger, who allowed him to travel and build the Farmers’ Almanac circulation while she tended to a new home in Maine and raising 5 children ……. four who were more than a handful. So, in honor of my mother’s 87th, enjoy this segment on the Geiger family and it’s role in the success of the Farmers’ Almanac.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
