London Gets Pounded

When I talk about weather, it is always the US and Canada. And, because I live in Northern New England, I tend to talk in terms of what is happening in my neck of the woods. But, weather is global. The “big weather news” outside of the US has to be what is happening in the UK. A foot of snow is newsworthy in any location. But, yesterday, London (England) received a foot of snow. When you think of a city with 10 million people and the largest snowfall in 18 years – paralysis sets in. The city is closed down. 2,800 schools, roads, rail and bus routes have all come to a standstill.
If you go online, you can watch folks enjoying the novelty of the moment. But, their extended forecast is for more snow for the balance of this week. So, snow and ice creates fun and then despair in the UK. The estimate of cost is approximately $2 billion. Meanwhile, it looks like the East Coast (US) is escaping a major snowfall with a storm out to sea leaving a few modest inches of snow along the way.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
