5 Good Reasons to Feed the Birds

  1. Winter is tough on birds especially where snow cover is deep. Help these wild friends out by putting some seed in a feeder.
  2. It’s fun to watch the types of birds that visit your bird feeder. Great photo opportunity too.
  3. See how well you know bird types. Play the name game — is it a chickadee, cardinal, woodpecker. Fun and educational too. Get a book from the library to help you identify them.
  4. Which food do they like best? Test out a few different kinds (there are tons of varieties available) and see which seed attracts the most, the prettiest, or your favorite birds.
  5. Seeing birds in your yard will remind you that spring is coming — even if it’s coming ever so slowly.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
