Makes 2 dozen cookies
The sugar in this recipe was reduced by 1/3, and the spices were doubled
Ingredients:
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup butter
1 egg
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking power
2 cups white whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 Cup pumpkin
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup raisins and/or walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions:
Combine butter, sugar, and egg, and mix until fluffy. In a separate bowl mix dry ingredients well. Add wet ingredients to butter, sugar, and egg mixture. Combine dry and wet ingredients. Mix well. Add nuts and/or raisins. Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes on a greased cookie sheet.

Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
