Ingredients
2 pounds smoked sausage, sliced in half lengthwise and cut into small slices
1 large onion, cut 8 wedges
1 medium cabbage, chopped
1/2 cup water
1 pound carrots, cut into 1/2-inch slices
5 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
Directions:
In a large soup pot, cook sausage and onion over medium heat until the sausage is lightly browned and the onion is soft. Add the cabbage and water. Cover and cook on low for 10 minutes. Stir in the carrots and potatoes. Cover and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
