Woolly Worms usually show up in the fall, but not to be confused with the summer woolly which is usually seen by itself, thats not the one to look for.  The fall Woolly's usually come out in mass and come in a variety of colors.  Overall the darker the color the worse the winter.

    Black-Harsh

    Light Brown- Mild etc

Some are black and brown and depending on how much brown compared to black makes a difference in the prediction.  A short patch of brown still leads to a harsh winter while a long patch of brown w/black on the ends could me a cold start and finish with a rather mind season in between.

Blonde can also mean mild but White seen with Black Woolly's for tells of a cold and very snowy winter.  The thickness of the “bands” makes a difference also.

As for where to find them… here in IL they find us, the show up in mass everywhere.  Maybe check around bean/corn fields if you have any in your area.  Whether people believe its true or not doesnt really matter to me.  Our local weather person has been doing a woolly worm forcast for many years and they have proven to be around 80% accurate.  (Collecting worms from all over the viewing area)  So good luck, hope ya find some!Laughing

If i find a blonde one ill let u know. but ill start my search for the fall wolly worms in october prolly. Do the worms reach all the way down to South Carolina?

  4. pearlss says:

Oh yea they reach South Carolina.  We use to see them in Georgia.  Generally they just show up on our porches and foundation.  I think the earliest we've seen them here in NC was like the 3rd week of August.

  5. The Rickster says:

I'll definitely keep an eye out. I used the Persimmon seed test last year. If I can get ahold of a Woolly Worm, then I want to try my luck with it.

    Dan,

I'm starting to become more hopeful of a northern US runner track… low pressure systems that sweep across the north central, then wrap around the lakes and become nor'easters into my region. If this happens and sucks in enough cold air, neither you or I will be posting on the FA this winter because we'll be too busy figuring out what to do with all of our snow. :)

I hope this happens, but things are looking especially good for you… my area could still swing either way.
