Hey there everybody… I have some questions about some weatherlore… Just some things I have noticed this summer so far.
1. Groundhogs have been building homes under sheds in my area of Ohio like crazy this summer??
2. I saw a Katydid yesterday… I was told the first frost comes 31 days after the Katydid’s are spotted out and about??
3. Cicada’s have been in full force for about 2 weeks now… aren’t they kind of early coming out early July??
Let me know if some of you guys-n-gals have the answers to these… just curious.

Yes! That most likely signifies an early winter with heavy snows and cold temperatures. I told you I had a feeling things were showing signals of an early rough start to winter. The berries had started growing 3 weeeks ago at the beginning of july! This usually happens for us in early september. Then, there was a cricket an praying mantis in the yard. Then there was a lizard in my house, one I saw on the street, and my famly reported of seeing these things everywhere! Tey usuallydon’t come here. I don’t know what that weatherlore about thelizzards mean, but I’m prettysure it’s a sign of a snowy winter.
Here in IL I spotted a baby Katydid several weeks ago, so atleast for me I dont think the early frost will hold true, tho it would be a nice break from the heat wave. As for the Cicada’s im so glad they are over your way! We had the 13yr ones about a month ago or so and my lord they were everywhere by the thousands, you couldn’t even go outside due to the noise & getting them all over you. I have noticed that the squirrels here have been cutting walnuts etc early, they are hardly big enough yet to do anything with.
That sure means your are will have a snowy winter, and a long one. Also, it should start early, if they’re already grabbing acorns in the middle of july! It will snow bad here in the mid-atlantic, and it’ll start early here as well. I’ve seen squirrels run like crazy eating pears and stuff. If the nuts have not even grown yyet, it’s way too early for this, and they got to be in a big rush for this winter coming early. Some berries are already ripe! The pears have not grown all the way, and they’re knawing on all of them! There are less birds. I’m getting ready for this winter, and you do the same, Smackdown, and Plowman, because it will look like old man winter is throwing up on us with snow! LoL!
Here in North Jersey Cicada’s are active, but like last year where the leaves were turning and nuts were falling early. Even FA Peter notice the fall of nuts early in his video. I would have to say I will wait to mid August to start looking for the signs. Not much activity on the critters for collecting, and leaves holding color right now. I will give 2 weeks more for changes to see if they start rolling in. Also look for fogging mornings also, which I see have clear mornings. Also the geese activity is right now is normal.
The geese have been really active within the last week or so also… not quite sure what they’re doing, groups of 20 or so?? We have had fog all summer long, at least once or twice a week.
All we can do right now is HOPE!!!
Maybe, they’re going south, because usually, geese show up in november! And I know for every fog in August, it will snow in the winter, but it doesn’t make sense, becaues some places like buffalo make see more than 31 days of snow in the winter, so just 31 days of fog isn’t enough for places like new york. So, I’m gonna put my 2 cents into this predictions and say that each fog in the summer, not just in august, signals a snowfall. How long has this 2 days a week fog happened? If this just started in July, that’s already 8 days of snow for ya, which is great enough! But you have all august and september, so god knows how many sno days, you’ll have! Lol. Are cicadas those bugs, that make those really loud buzzing and hammer-like noises? I think here some right now! At currently 8:26 A.M. after writing this post for a few minutes. Does this signify as another sign for a bad winter, if these cicadas are louder than usual? Because these things are really loud this year, and already making loud noises at 8 in the morning!
But we haven’t see any fog in North Jersey as of yet, I see most of the time see in August. Geese are not active yet in our area. So if the fog is out in your area early does that mean your area will be hit with the snow.
For now things are normal in North Jersey, no fog, no critters, and no over head flying geese. I’ll keep my fingers for August changes.
If this continues throughout august and september, new jersey may not have a bad winter the way it sounds right now, but we’ll have to see because i think all that’ll change next monthin august, because i think you’ll have a severe snowy winter this year!
When should I in N.C start turning on the heat?
Will it be windy and cold again?
Will this winter be ENSO-neutral?
Thanks, God bless you!
Here in around the Mt.Vernon,IL area Ive been seeing maple trees slightly changing colors is that a sign of anything at all???
There will be an east-based la nina or if you need it in english, pretty much the mid atlantic southeast deep south and northeast should be ready for a severely snowy and severely and unbelievably col winter. And yes, his winter will be windy and cold. You should be needing it by november, and we’ll need around late october, or november. So us as well as you will have a terribly cold winter, which in my opinion’s great!
Will N.C’s leaves change colors earlier this year?
Tell me some signs of cold winter, so I can monitor for them.
Thanks, God bless!
Lot of mixed things being said like that this fall will be warm and then some saying that this fall will be cold is no one so sure or what do you say? I know the PNA NAO were showing negative last night if I remember right.
If leaves start falling earlier, because of course if they’re changing colors, they’re going to fall off very soon, but if they fall off the trees earlier than usual, this means that winter will be mild! Leaves shouldn’t fall in NC any time soon, signaling a bad winter.
From last year and as Peter Geiger show, the nuts were falling early and up in North Jersey it was the same for us. We alot of early Folklore signs and we had a ton of snow. For this year so far going to August there are no early Folklore signs. I hoping to see some changes in Mid August, I wondering if we will get an Indian Summer and maybe that is why no early signs yet…
yeah fall may not start early up there. just wait till about next week on tuesday like i said, and let me know about any signs.
August is a key month for lore when we really start to see lore signs. So far I am seeing mix view across the country. Mid August will give a better picture, but if these signs start mixup the start times then that will be interesting. Out in PA not much signs or changes by me.
Weaps….
That’s wierd how all over the northeast, no one is seeing signs of a bad winter. Maybe it won’t be oo bad for the northeat.
I too think that August will bring the greatest signs. So far here in Richmond, I’ve noticed some smaller trees leaves color are lighter this week than last. I have my eyes open, I don’t want to jump to conclusions. I will keep everyone posted on anything I see. No fog yet. Can’t wait to find a persimmon tree around September or early October. What an exciting time of the year!
yeah, it’s exciting! If leaves start changing colors earlier than normal, this foretells a warm winter.
