So I would like to present you with the following weather folklore that I have noticed around here that indicate a harsh winter:
- The Squirrels have been going crazy all Summer long!
- The nests of the bees and wasps are high up this year.
- Ant hills were high in July.
- The wild grasses and weeds are quite tall this Summer.
- The fruit bearing plants have been absolutely loaded! And the birds have cleaned the fruit
bearing trees out already!
- Fruits are ripening and falling early.
- The insects have been RIDICULOUS this year…no matter how much we spray…ants and
spiders everywhere!
- The first week of August has been warm, and that fortells a winter white and long.
Some to look for as we head towards and into Autumn:
- If St. Bartholomews be clear, a prosperous Autumn comes that year (St.
Bartholomews is August 24th).
- Dry August and warm, doth harvest no harm.
- If Michaelmas (Sept. 29th) brings many acorns, christmas will cover the
fields with snow.
- When berries are many in October, beware a hard winter.
- When birds and badgers are fat in October, Winter will be harsh.
- If the wind comes from the NW on St. Martins Day (Nov. 11th) there’s
a severe winter on the way.

hmmm, I usually only see the halos in winter, and they usually do warn of an impending winter storm, not always a strong one, but the halos also come in various sizes, and from what I have seen, the larger the halo around the moon, the more powerful the storm, and the brighter it is, I think the colder the the air will be behind the system, or so it seems, and here in Colorado, those halos are pretty reliable, but I am not exactly sure about what causes the actual phenomenon itself, I will do more research on the subject.
This one seemed about the same size as the one I saw last January, but maybe not as bright. Its too warm and the forecasts don’t support a winter storm any time soon for my area. Some rain does show up, but nothing storm wise. I think it is just a random sighting that is not really showing anything unless it is showing something to take place in a few weeks like another octobomb or something. That super wind storm mostly missed me last year!
Well, be on your toes, because I am also seeing more rain/snow probabilities popping up in our forecast about 8 days out, which is an indication that a trough may come more inland from the pacific than earlier suggested, we will have to see though, so keep watching the short term forcasts for increasingly refined details about that.
Here in Indiana, the squirrels have been VERY busy since August. And they look fat and happy..does this mean winter weather soon?
sapporo1 the forecast does support some even much colder days for fort wayne with some chances for rain, but that is about it in the next two or so weeks. If the halo is anything this time than I am not seeing it yet other than what you might be seeing. We normally don’t see snow of any amount until November and measurable until late November based on what I seen in many years living here.
indygirl based on what I noticed of others talking on here, I believe that if the squirrels are very busy gathering nuts and getting fatter than usual than that is a sign of a colder and snowier winter. If they start earlier in the season than usual than I believe that is also a sign winter will start early so it does seem that what you are seeing might be a sign of winter very soon!
i have found at least 10 spiders in my basemeant this summer
