August Fog & Fall Webworms?

Posted By: WinteryKate  Posted On: Aug 18th, 2011  Filed Under: Weather

Hi all,
I did want to inform you that Central OH had thick fog this morning! lol Yay! My great-uncle actually commented about it too, saying that this winter was going to be bad (for the majority of the population, good for me!)

I also want to inquire about fall webworms. There seem to be thousands of them; more than I have seen… ever, really. I asked my mom and she said she seems to think they were this bad the first year we moved here, and that that winter was snowier and colder than usual. They are everywhere! Webs hanging from every limb on most trees!! Crazy and unsightly! lol Just wanted to see if you knew anything?

What is a Fall webworm?  Can you take a picture of it please.  Thanks!

  2. TheMaineMan says:

Is that the same thing as a gypsy moth? If so, I’m actually seeing fewer of those than normal so far ( a good thing, they’re ugly!)

  3. FatherFrost says:

You’re talking about the silkworms. They make the big webs in the trees each spring and fall. They hatch as fuzzy caterpillars and turn into moths.

  4. spellbound says:

But is there a folklore about them Fatherfrost ??  We have alot of them too.  I remember seeing them alot as a kid but they are bad this year here too.  Thank you, Karen

What part of Ohio Kate? I’m up in the Mansfield area, but I work in Delaware. :) Been here all my life. Where did you move from?

The Folklore with the silkworms has to do with the height of the nests… the lower to the ground, then the warmer the winter? I don’t usually gauge by that though bc I have seen em high and low with snowy winters/warm winters. But they did start early this year, they began popping up about mid-July in Ohio. And they are extremely abundant, almost disgusting. I hate those nests. We’ve been steady on the fogs too… extremely consistant most mornings in central/north central Ohio since mid July also (20 out of the last 30 days or so).

We did have one morning of 49 last week I believe. LOVED IT!!! LOL

lol! Yes, we had a chilly morning, too, Plowman! I live in Fairfield Co., we moved here maybe 10 years ago from MD.

And yes I agree with you on the height of the nests. I see some in the very tops of the trees, and some not-so. Yesterday morning saw more fog, too! =D And there are some trees just plain yellow, and a couple almost entirely red! It makes me happy, lol.

For those who don’t know, Fall Webworms or “silkworms” are the white fuzzy catterpillars that climb up trees and make webs, like a spider, that hold them while they eat the leaves of the trees. Almost like a tree house. They end up turning into gorgeous white months. They. Are. Everywhere!

Hopefully these severe storms are a sign of winter to come too!!! Nice lightning show this morning and looks like we’re due for another one tonight. :) I plow for ODOT so I’m always trying to keep up on the weather, especially winter. My life is owned by ODOT when the snowflakes fall from above. But I love winter regardless. I just would love to see another 2008!!! Definitely a great year for us winterwise… I think we were around 40″ ABOVE normal for the season that year. I actually noticed some trees on I-71 today that were changing to yellow… so keep your fingers crossed Kate!!! Not to mention FA is predicting a little winterstorm around the 1st or 2nd week of December. :D

  8. WinteryKate says:

That is what I thought, re:the storms. Last summer we had terrible storms, remember?! Really crazy. Believe me, my fingers have been crossed since the last snow melted! lol! I don’t think I can take a warm winter. =\ My family would do away with me xD

At my university’s campus we have trees with branches of full reds, oranges, and yellows, while the rest of the tree is green! I cannot wait until they erupt fully.

LOL – Yeah, I know what you mean. I’ve been kind of thinking the same thing. I’ve been meaning to look up the summer/fall of ’07 and see how it compares to this summer/fall so far. I think we’re on course for another ’07-’08 winter here.

Believe me… I get my ration of crapp on my facebook too. Because I love winter, if it wasn’t for a few personal obligations I would already live in Alaska!!! :) LOL

’07-’08 was about average snowfall for me. If it turns out to be another ’08-’09, that’d be killer! My class ends around December 5th or 6th, so if I can have my exam before the 14th, then that would be awesome! It started snowing around the 13th or 14th in December ’08. Only lightly on that day. After that though, it just coming and coming and started dumping about 20 cm at a time for each system. Must have had at least 3′ on the ground at one point :)

’07-’08 is my favorite so far… not to mention, the storm we got March 8, 2008 was my birthday. So mother nature must love me a little bit. LOL
