Earthquake!

Oh my goodness, I was eating lunch and all of a sudden my car starts shaking for what seemed like a long time (probably 7 seconds).  I was watching tv, and talking on the phone at the same time, we both said “Earthquake”!  I rushed back to work to find most folks in my building was outside.  We went back inside (I’m on the 16th floor) , (a bit too soon for my me), but everyone is cleary (excuse my pun) shaken! 5.9 Mineral Va which is about 40 miles or so from me.  Read that folks from Canada to South Carolina felt it.  I’m hoping there’s not too much damage and that everyone is okay.  Whew!  To think I thought the upcoming hurricane was the most exciting thing this week.

Thanks Grandin.  Reports are coming in still.  Most newer bldg. seemed to fair well.  I’m in the twin towers downtown Richmond now.  The building swayed side to side, luckily I was on lunch and not in that building.  Still the car felt like 5 men were shaking the car.  I was a bit dizzy afterwards for about an hour.  My knees are still shaking, but that’s due to nerves:).  There were 15 ederly in a high-rise bldg that was hurt while evacuating the building, and a 250 year old house was damaged.  Reports are still coming in.  We’re all focused on Irene, and this earthquake has caught us completly by surprise.  No one knew what to do.  Scary and creepy.  Glad you’re okay Snowboi1.

I felt it too Snowlover here in Southampton County! WOW! We almost never seen an Earthquake that strong here! 5.9 on the Rictor Scale is quite the “Big One” for us. lol. My house, the ground, the trees, windows, power lines, everything was shaking like hell for 30 seconds. lol.

    Here are the stats:

-The Earthquake occured at 1:51PM EST with an epicenter in Mineral, VA.
-The Earthquake was a surface quake occuring only around a mile below the surface.
-The Quake was a 5.9 on the Rictor Scale.
-The Quake was felt all the way in Canada to the north, S. Carolina to the south, and Ohio to the West.
-There have been minor damage reports, power outages, some minor injuries, down phone lines, etc.
-All federal workplaces and monuments in DC were evacuated and are closed.
    -Several buildings locally were evacuated.
-The last time VA experienced a Quake this strong was in 1895.

Yes it was creepy! Our cottages just shook, my daughter who was sick in bed said her bed shook. We live in the eastern panhandle of west virginia. My one daughter works in the hospital here and she said the hospital just really shook pretty hard and the hospital is 7 stories tall. They were getting people out of the hospital and into the parking lot till the building was checked out. She said it really scared her.

I work in Lexington, NC.  I was standing in my bosses doorway, leaning on it.  I thought it was a heavily loaded dump truck or something barreling through on the access road in front of our building. Except several people here at the office said they thought it was an earthquake.  Turns out it was!  On a side note though, our one dog who is sensitive to these kinds of things (weather changes, etc.) wouldn’t eat at all yesterday.  I chalked it up to the weather patterns changing; ie: the Hurricane coming or the cooler weather pattern  – we’ve been in the upper 50′s for 2 night).  Maybe he knew something was going to happen!  This morning?  He ate just fine.

  7. snowlover says:

Pearlss that is so interesting!  I believe your dog had some sort of insight or could hear something that wasn’t quite normal.  I’m glad everyone here is fine, and there were no structual damage to our homes.  Now what in the world is Irene doing?  Last heard that it was turning east.  Our local Met is only predicting 60% rain for Sat. & Sun.  Figures…I brought supplies yesterday.  Oh well..better safe than sorry:)

  8. pearlss says:

Welllll, they say animals can sense it up to 24 hours before it happens.  I really wish I could have been home yesterday just to see how he acted before it hit.   I know that when we have a thunder storm coming, he’ll go and hide under the bed long before we actually hear the rumbling.  Unfortunately, he’ll do that even if the storm goes around us, like south or northwest or something.

i was in my bed and my started shaking so i thought maybe a helicopter was going over my house and then my house started going left to right and ran out kick cause i relies it was a earthquake and everybody was on the streets and all the dogs were barking.
