So far the turn of the calendar has not done much to cool us down… after some nice cool days at the end of August where highs stayed in the low 70s and night temps in the 40s, we’re in a stretch of weather where highs top 80 and the night temps hover around 60, significantly above average. Not only that, but summer-like humidity is persisting, making it feel even warmer. I think a return to average temperatures is probable by the weekend and then especially through the end of next week, although so far there is no spell of “below-average temperatures” in sight. This doesn’t really surprise me as I didn’t see any “cool spells” reaching this part of the northeast in September, and possibly not even until mid-October. Nevertheless, I anticipate that the summer-like conditions will end this weekend and perhaps stay away for the most part. Won’t complain about seasonable temps!

For awhile at the end of August I was doubting my original forecast of a hot and humid Labor Day… but at the last second Labor Day turned out to be hot and humid. What a way to end the last “unofficial” day of summer.

The good news: no threat of frost up here yet, which is great for people who are trying to get as much out of their gardens as possible. I don’t think central Maine will see its first frost until mid-October, which will be slightly later than normal (October 8) and will coincide with the cycle of the full moon (frost is more likely during full moons).
