When should I plant sunflower seeds/plants to have blooms in late july 2012?

Im actually planning on planting sunflowers as well since i find them very ambiant to the eyes especially when they bloom big sunny yellow flowers! they are also one of my favorite flowering plants so I was also wondering when is the best time to plant them, when they will really blossom big healthy flowers. I do hope we get help from some seniors, I’m a newbie at planting as well. Goodluck to planting as well! looking forward for posts updates on this.

I started mine when I saw Easter decorations going up. I seeded them in those little greenhouse pod thingies, put them on a shelf in my bay window, and in about a month they were tall enough to go in the ground. I try to track where the sun rises and sets in my yard and I planted them in the part that is in the sun all day long. I just did my first “batch” last year and had a good bunch come up. Wasn’t expecting them to need stakes their whole life though. I wound up splitting up an old tiki torch into about ten long skinny strips (where it had been cut by the manufacturer for the torch) and it worked perfectly; not too heavy, not too light, and they stay in the ground well.

It’s best to at least wait until the last frost in your area. Many of the seed packs have zonal planting guide maps and they all have directions on planting for that particular plant. You can click on the following link to determine the best time to begin planting in your area.

    Sunflowers are great plants. :)
