We had a frost advisory lastnight and it did frost and this morning it almost looked like it was raining leaves off the trees and some of the trees that were green before lastnight had patches of yellow leaves in them. Tonight we have a freeze warning I can only imagine the shape the trees will be in tomorrow. We’re also supposed to have a widespread frost Saturday morning between 4-8am.

It was 26 degrees this morning… and tomorrow night’s forecast low is currently 22 degrees. Not bad for end of October.
We also have a freeze warning here in the Eastern Panhandle of WV from tonight to Sunday morning. First the frost warning, then the very heavy wet snow and now a freeze warning, so bye bye to my mums till next year. It is going to be in the low 20′s tonight and 27 at 8 am in the morning, BRRRRR!!!
They’re not even issuing warnings up here anymore… once late October comes, frosts and freezes are just assumed.
We ended up getting both a freeze and a frost. Although my NOAA weather radio said the temp got down to 37 or 38 degrees, but my temperature/weather gauge said it got down to either 30 or 31 degrees. I’m believing it’s going to be a harsh or severe winter. All our oak trees acorns are on the ground. They began to fall back in early or mid September. I think the leaves began to change and fall sometime in August or early September. Some trees still have some green leaves.
Several days ago I saw a yellow woolyworm with black stripe down the middle of it’s back and black on the front and back of the woolyworm. Does that predict the winter? Or does the woolyworm need to be orange with black stripes or bands? Also alot of drag lines outside this summer and continuing into the fall. Also saw a very big garden spider on a drag line connected to our pine tree earlier in the fall. There was also a fairly big spider in the bathtub weeks ago followed probably days later by a smaller one. I don’t know what type of spiders they were. They were either very dark brown or black. None of them were black widows though. I’m glad.
We had a very abundant acorn crop for the squirrels this year, more so than we did last year. And I remember we had a huge blizzard February 1 this year. We ended up with between 18-21 inches of snow and that was without the assistance of thunderstorms. I’m hoping for thundersnow this winter season. The last time we had thundersnow was early December of 2006, quite a bit of lightning with loud thunder at times and we had I believe 18 inches of snow with that storm it wasn’t a blizzard.
The thundersnow occured for 4 or 5 hours sustained. We 3 or 4 inches of snow per hour. Yes I pretty much looked out a window looking outside the entire time. It began sometime after midnight and continued through 4 almost 5am. It was cool. The lightning was quite bright at times, I don’t remember seeing any lightning bolts mainly flash lightning. But it was still cool.
