Winter Question

I keep noticing people say winter might not start til mid Dec. which is later. My question is if it starts later does that mean it will just go longer as into March?Im in South Carolina.

Not necessarily.  If we were in a situation where a cold pattern only held for 1-2 months before switching to typical Nina conditions, it would reduce the chance for March to be cold (think last year during March) along with snow chances.    However, it doesn’t eliminate the probability of a freak snow event even if said pattern supported warm with less precipitation so keep that in mind as well.
It also does not mean that winter couldn’t sustain its grip for a longer period, especially if the overall Northern Hemispheric pattern supported extended cold and snow chances all the way into Mid-March for places further south in the US.   We’ve had our fair share of such through history and it can happen again for this winter.  Despite all of this, it is currently unknown when exactly winter gets rolling but as I pointed out in another topic, the modeling has been suggesting a change to colder conditions starting early December so we’ll see if they continue to show that solution or lose it altogether in the latter.

Snowboi being in south Carolina (which is a beautiful state by the way) your chances of having a good winter are looking slim at this point, sadly enough. The northern tier of the country is struggling to cool down at this point, this pattern should change hopefully if models are right by the 2nd week of December.

I live in central Illinois and the high for thanksgiving is going to be 55, unseasonably warm especially this far north. But one thing to keep in mind, 2nd year Nina’s tend to be colder than there predecessor. Not to mention, look at Alaska -50!!

I’m not saying you won’t see cold shots, but I’m just honestly not seeing this “epic, winter of the ages” setting up right now.

Yea i agree with you Illinoise, South carolina will probably have some snow but overall it will probably be pretty warm down there. Alot of forecast ive seen have them slightly warmer than average with mostly rain events but anything is possible.
