It is the Spring of 2012. So… what are you growing…. now? —— Would you like to know what I have planted this year? OK. First… and nearest to my heart….. so far, I have planted FIVE rose bushes. Three white “Iceberg” and two “Climbing Golden Showers”. I love roses. ——- Three clemantis vines (bare root, from packages). I have already forgotten where I planted them. (No… I did NOT mark the spots.) I DID plant them very near the new rose bushes….. because I AM good about continuously watering new rose bushes. And…. I figured that was my best chance of keeping the clemantis alive. I realize this is very poor form….. but I DO have lots of clemantis vines already growing in my yard…. so this does work….. sometimes. ——– Now, I’ll stop talking, and give somebody else a chance. Although I HAVE planted other things…. and I’ll talk about those things…. another time!

I have started a bunch of seeds… and I’ll talk about them later.
I got two 6-packs of stocks (dflowers) at a grocery store. Stocks smell HEAVENLY to me. I planted them in big big pots that I grow vegetables in. The vegetables are pretty small right now. I’ll move the stocks, later, if they crowd each other.
Today… at another market…. there were golden “celosia” plants… $1.88 for 6. I got two packs. The tag says they grow well in hot dry conditions… and I have some of those conditions along the street. I have grown these in multi-colors in previous years. This time… I am going for the one color. It looks “kind of classy” to me…. AND…. they only had one color at that store.
I ALSO got five different kinds of tomato plants at Wal-Mart. I am transplanting them to bigger containers… and I have one left. So far… I can’t find a bigger container. I bet I “recycled them” in a fit of neatness, last fall. Many gardeners are neat. “Neatness” is not MY friend!
The lettuce I planted is big and pretty. I think I’ll eat some tomorrow!
So…. what are you growing?
Moonflowers are one of my passions. Have you ever grown them? They take a LONG time to bloom… three months? more? And…. they have to be kept watered all that time. But…. if you remember to water them faithfully… they are big, magical flowers…. that bloom in the evening. I have some that I grew to the “leaf stage” and planted in the garden. They are still alive…. AND I planted more moonflower seeds near them. I have another batch of moonflower seeds … growing… in the house. They haven’t sprouted above-ground yet.
I have two big flats of cosmos… growing from seed. Yes, yes, I know that cosmos are supposed to be one of the easiest things to grow from seed!!!!! But…. I have NOT been very successful with them… in the past. So…. I am growing some in flats.. AND… I will plant some more seeds… right into the dirt.
I am a good bit nervous…. because I saw a sign yesterday…. saying that our last “frost date” is somewhere in the April 20 – 30 range. So… I am doing a lot of “gambling” this year.
I want to plant winter squash soon. I love them… and they really ARE expensive in the stores. $1.69 to $2.19 a pound. I have planted some cucumbers. I know that it is really to early for them, too.
OK… I’m going outside…. before it rains.
And now I’m back. To take a rest. And still…. you haven’t posted……. So? does that mean that you are seriously gardening? And… much too intent… to play on the computer?
I was weeding. I don’t remember weeding much in the past. Maybe I blocked it out. But I think that I did NOT do much weeding. Weeding is….. time-consuming. And…. I preferred to be spending money. Buying plants for the garden. Buying books. Doing all sorts of things. But…. the rising prices of ALL NECESSITIES IN THE USA…. HAS DIMINISHED THE AMOUNT OF CASH THAT I HAVE FOR RECREATION. ERGO…. TIME FOR WEEDING.
AND…. I MADE AN AMAZING DISCOVERY. JAPANESE PAINTED FERNS. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE? IF NOT… YOU CAN LOOK THEM UP. Sorry about the all caps. These Ferns are supposed to multiply. I bought a few…. years ago… and they were pricey. And…. they NEVER spread. In fact…. the original three died out. And today…… I was in an entirely different part of the shady garden…. and there they are. Six or eight of them. Different sizes. Beautiful Japanese Painted Ferns. I never would have noticed them….. if I hadn’t been weeding.
This is the kind of thing that keeps me humble about gardening. Before this discovery today….. I would have said….. that Japanese Painted Ferns are NOT very good plants…. at least not here. This just shows me….. once again….. that the ONLY safe course of action for me….. is humility.
This is one of the most important things about gardening…. for me. Gardening teaches me so many important lessons. And it teaches them gently… and with beauty.
I
‘ll rest for a while. And then…. I’ll go back out.
that sounds very interesting what you grew
