I know winter is a long ways off but what the heck, it’ll make for some good conversation, right? As we all have agreed this past winter was a total heart-breaking bust. But may be there is some hope of a turn around this upcoming winter. This spring everything has been at least a month, if not more, early. The blackberries are already in bloom, lightning bugs are already out, various plant growing early and producing very well, the cotton wood trees are putting out more seed than I have ever seen, its literally pilling up on the ground like snow & of course the insects will be thick… etc. With everything being at least a month early one is safe to assume winter will follow the same path. And could it be that everything is “mass producing” to prepare for what is to come? What say you?

Tornadoes2, it honestly wouldn’t surprise me if winter was spring-like and summer being exceptionally hot and humid. Unfortunately, fall seems to come later now, as well. Do you think the amount of skin cancer victoms will drastically increase between now and 2016?
Sapporo1, I believe that. I still havea some family and friends in Durango, Colorado, and they’ve said it’s horribly dry out there. Even fires are popping up everywhere. Speaking of lakes, do you know where Vallecito Lake is, in southwestern Colorado? They too have good fishing. But they’ve also had a few years, here and there, where the lake levels have been quite low. 2002 being a real good example; The same year as the huge Missionary Ridge Fire, near Durango (June, 2002).
Anyways, cross your fingers and hope for a good monsoon season.
Although drought is a major concern, I really do believe that 2012-13 is going to be a good season for snow and cold in most, if not nearly all U.S. regions.
yeah ur right the southern most usa will get cold and snow nothern states will be hot and stormy the two airmass will meet willl creat epic storm like the scifiction movies.all of the western states will be on fire eastern nothern states will be ring on fire the winter will be worse than normal.
i love nicole if you compare 2006 2007 winter was warm then snow late in the winter 2011 2012 was warmer then average then snow late in the winter similiar then 2006 2007 winter now going to this winter 2012 2013 winter will be much different then 2011 2012 winter we will have strong signal of el nino this winter why bc the oceans temperature is warming up further warmth and the humidity we are getting now will make more severe then any other years on record. The el nino will be warming up by early august and make it cool for little bit in october and then significantly will make hotter then normal starting november bc the oceans will warm significantly too. We are at 2.0 degree, ferinheight is 3.7 but south is 1.8 degree, now we will have more water droplets ever before we complain more dry heat before then ever, now we will have a hot and humid is in the forecast more severe thunderstorms than normal we are exciting time now hopefully everybody stay safe and have nice week, talk to u later.
I hope things should be different this winter for this year, here in the mid atlantic.
I came across this September 2010 blog that was posted by Joe Bastardi about upcoming winters. He was saying he expects the winters: 2012-2013, 2013-2014, and 2014-2015 to be very similar to the record cold winters from the late 1970′s. I really don’t know if this guy is pretty accurate or some kind of nut, so can someone fill me in on that? ha. The late 70′s winters in Memphis were in the top ten for record coldest, meaning I may see below zero temperatures if that’s true. If that’s the case for the Mid-South, imagine the Northwest, Mid West, and Northeast: Some temps could be well below zero and above average snowfall. If the upcoming winters will be very similar to the late 70′s, it will effect the whole country. 1977 is when Miami recorded it’s first and only snow flurries…..this means snow could fall as far south as Miami. If Bastardi is not just pulling some crap, then I have a message for the upcoming winters: BRING IT ON!
i say this winter will be biking barbquing and playing golf say hi to el nino my friend its coming
Dang. Another sucky winter…?
Please i cant take another crappy winter for South Carolina. When will it ever be cold again from late nov-early mar.
southwestern ontario getting a stormy pattern next week let me know thankx.
Well, I won’t hold my breath here in Palmer Lake, Colorado, there’s really no guarantee that El Niño favors us being that we are so centrally located in the US, we sometime get screwed no matter what the weather anomaly, though more often than not, El Niño does bring very heavy fall to early winter and late winter to late spring monster storms that dump feet of snow on us.
However, I won’t cross my fingers hoping for what may or may not happen, because it’ going to take a whole lot more than just a good blizzard or two to undo the vast and lasting damage that those back to back dastardly La Nina anomalies did to us, especially that menacing 2010-2011 La Nina.
I sure hope any experts here have any, and I mean ANY good news to throw at me about improving weather across Colorado.
I really don’t think that “spring came a month early, therefore every other season will come early” is very logical. Sure winter started early last year… but what historical examples suggest that this is probable to continue? I think of 2009… spring started early, summer started very late, then summer ended very early (very short summer, pretty much just August since June and July were near-record cool). Then winter came very late that year. I mean, I just don’t see how we can think that winter will come early just because spring came early. Maybe it WILL come early, but for different reasons.
Just my thoughts.
More and more people are saying we’ll have a winter similar last year…….a Spring instead of winter. Oh well, cold lovers better hope for the best.
similar TO last year… sorry, ha.
I sure pray not.
At least fires aren’t consuming your entire state like they are here in Colorado…
Our entire climate has temporarily been Calitexicanized (made that word up),or in other words, been reduced to being as oppressively hot and dry as far southwest Texas, southern California and northern Mexico, that is terrifying in of itself, but to add insult to injury, sagebrush have been sprouting up amongst the sea of dying grass and even dying trees in the forests, that is insane, sagebrush just don’t grow at this elevation, or in this life zone in general, as it normally far too cool and wet for such shrubbery to do well in this environment, but that just goes to show you that severe drought can cause very adverse effects.
Tell me that there is hope of significant relief for Colorado for this fall and winter.
El Niño usually brings Colorado some drought relief. And there is an el niño watch in effect for this fall and winter. Cross your fingers.
We could have an early Winter! According to the 4 month forecast, October 20-23 will be cold for the western half of the US. For the eastern half, unseasonably cold temps with widespread frosts (including: Southeast, Mid South, North East, Great Lakes)
Well, what has my eye, is that it says stormy weather spreads first into Colorado, then heavy rains spread into Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Southern Plains and Mississippi.
That being said, could this stormy weather possibly translate into a possible paralyzing blizzard, as tends to happen during El Niño years in both October and March, or does stormy merely imply that it could be more of a rain/snow event?
Guess we will just have to see when that time comes, and if there is in fact a storm around the October 16th to 19th time frame.
I really hope it is a snowy wet fall/winter… with these current drought conditions we desperately need it. My area is now 8-10inches under for precip. If we was to have another mild winter I hate to think how next year will be. We are in a mod/severe drought as of today, with a heat wave building I look for this to bump up to the next level. How is it in your areas?
Flooding for me.
