August foggy mornings!

Posted By: snowlover  Posted On: Jul 30th, 2012  Filed Under: Weather

Be on the lookout for foggy mornings in August.  An almost sure sign that there will be a cold/stormy winter ahead.  I remember August 2009 had a quite a few thick foggy mornings, that winter was good (snowy). Last August had maybe 1 foggy morning.  We ended up that winter with 2 traces of snow for the entire season :( .   So here’s hoping for a lot of thick foggy mornings next month.  August is also the time to keep an eye out for other signs that nature foretell.  I was in West Virginia last weekend and I saw a home that had LARGE persimmons on the tree!  At first I thought it was apples.  At least I think it was persimmons :)   If anyone fine one don’t forget to cut the seed down the middle.  Let us know your findings please.

I’ve been watching the squirrels and have seen in my back yard daily. and been finding bee hives in the top of my house. Will be watching for foggy august mornings. I hope western NY gets some awesome snow storms this winter.

Still not sold on the August fogs. I’ve tracked it for a few years, and there’s virtually no correlation, at least here.

I am seeing many supposed signs of an impending crazy winter ahead.
For starters, I never knew we had acorn bushes in Colorado, but just yesterday, I found out we do indeed, and there are already so many acorns growing, berries of every kind are maturing, and more numerous than I have seen in a long time, leaves are alreading starting to change around here, and not only just due to drought, because lately we have been getting pounded with rain, but also it may be a first warning that this winter could be a very cold and snowy winter, spider webs are sprawled over what seems like every square inch around here, high and low alike, just everywhere, fat deer feeding like they’re on a mission, saw some fogs that were heavy during July, junipers producing insane amounts of seeds, I mean all of this has to mean something, because it hasn’t happened in a long time.
Speaking of rainstorms, crazy how it started raining around 3pm yesterday, here it is almost 2am and it is still continuously raining, and very hard at that, I can’t remember the last time I have seen it rain so long in the summer here in Colorado, we must have gotten at least 3 or 4 inches of rain by now, perhaps more, who knows, I think that means we can say goodbye to anymore prolonged heat waves if we keep getting rain like this, makes me happy to finally see some significant rainfall to put a dent in the drought.

At this point I’d just welcome some cool fall days! It is oppressive hot this summer. My oldest dog has developed a weird habit. She’s taken to licking and chewing on her own paws to the point that they swell and hurt. It’s out of boredom. It’s been so hot that she’s tired all the time and when she’s tired, she licks and chews. In order to avoid her going after her paws, we just literally loaded up with chew objects (hooves, Nylabones, Earz, etc.) to keep her away from her paws. It’s pathetic.

Anyways, We have a persimmon tree in back behind our house. Once hubby swacks back the forest that’s growing back there (been too hot to do much this summer – grass gets cuts every 2-2 1/2 weeks this year) I’ll be better able to tell if there’s any berries on it yet. The oak trees are loaded with acorns, though not much has hit the ground yet, and the pine trees have some of the biggest cones forming I’ve ever seen. We have been inundated by bugs this year and the spiders are a “I don’t give up easy” species this year. They keep building a web at the corners of our porch and I keep knocking them down and killing the spiders only to have one replace it a day or two later. Geesh!

Our one sure sign that cool weather is on it’s way is the pair of mice that like to hide under my hibiscus bushes at the back porch and nest (drives the dogs absolutely nuts!) Haven’t seen them yet, but it’s early days. The dogs will let us know when they are back.

The squirrels have been a bit more “squirrely” this year and so have the rabbits. Will be interesting.

    My observations thus far:

    1. Most plants are well ahead of schedule this year as far as flowering, fruiting, developing new branches, etc. I’m not sure how much to attribute to the early spring and summer we had (I would think an early start would lead to an early peak, right?) and how much to plants’ anticipation of future seasons. Trees and plants are showing a lot of new growth, but of course the conditions have been optimal (hot, wet, etc.) for fast plant growth.

    2. Squirrels, chipmunks, moles, other rodents: not really noticing much. They’re acting…normal I suppose? I’ve found quite a few dead rodents around my yard which is a bit odd, but I also keep catching a stray cat around the yard as well, so I suspect that the two probably go hand-in-hand. The dead animals don’t look maimed or anything, so I can’t tell if the cat is killing them and leaving them, or if something else is causing this.

    3. These strange crop signs keep appearing in my corn stalks….. just kidding!

    4. Cricket/insect activity… normal.

    5. Fog has been about normal. Generally dry conditions as of late have made it less foggier than normal. Since humidity has been returning, the fogs have been returning as well.

    6. There are a few yellow leaves on my crabapple tree already. This is usually a bad sign (I’ve personally observed that early colors in the trees tend to precede a more mild winter, while green leaves holding on late are often followed by a colder winter). Precipitation levels play a huge role in this, but precipitation has been close to normal overall.

    7. Not many thunderstorms, but the ones we are getting have been stronger than normal as a whole (wind damage, small hail, a confirmed tornado in Woolwich).

At this point, I don’t really have many interpretations to make. To me, the flora and fauna are taking advantage of optimal growing/feeding conditions this summer, and this will probably continue well into the fall if these conditions continue. If anything, I expect Fall to be rather close to normal temperature/precipitation wise in Northern New England.

Geese are starting to get into formation here.  I have a Great Dane that is shedding/molting bucketfulls, preparing for her winter coat I’m guessing.  Also, I don’t know if there is any correlation between the two but there has been an abundance of fire flies too, it just seems that when we have a bunch of them the winter to follow is cold and snowy. Keeping my fingers crossed………….

We are having a very foggy morning here in central Alabama today! We don’t see many of those in August.

Richmond Va had a foggy start to it’s first day of August!  Fatima, FatherFrost how did your morning fare today?  I believe you’re a bit east of me.  Hope all of your August mornings are cool, safe, & pleasant ones.  This is when we get ready to get ready for autumn and winter.  To me this is the best time to be on this FA forum.  August lets me know that soooooon fall will be here!  Not soon enough for most folks on here I’m sure.  :)

We had a little bit of fog this morning down here in S.C.

Squirrels have been nuts this summer. Haven’t paid attention to they’er tales…just the fact they they are leaving alot of eatin pine cones and stuff on the ground. Spider activity has been pretty bad…so has the insect activity in general. As I mentioned in a separate post, my aunt said she seen Snow Birds around here last month too.

We’ll see what happens. I hope this fall is nice and cool and this winter is snowy!
