Winter Weather Signs

Posted By: WeatherMan2  Posted On: Aug 15th, 2012  Filed Under: Weather

I have been studying nature for the past month or so and have notice some things that could lead to a winter that we wont soon forget. Well let me get started by saying that I have not seen a single woolly worm this year, if any of you have seen one I would love to get your pictures and post of what color they are this year. Another thing foliage has started rather early here in South Shore, KY and I also checked the stems in the leaves and the tree has stopped feeding water to the leave which usually don’t start happening until the leaves start to fall. Also I have not seen any bees nests in the tree tops and I heard from some old time farmers that that usually means that they are building their hives in the trees which means that they are preparing for a very harsh winter. One of my friends has also noticed that most of the summer birds are already gone. Send me your folk lore and what you think about the upcoming winter. I think according to the signs that it is pointing to a bad winter and that the cold weather will make up for this hot summer.

Well send me your post and send me your weather pics and folk lore. It is gonna be an exciting year and I look forward for the upcoming winter season.

That is good news to hear i cant wait until that is snow that we see on the ground. This month is off to a good start so far and i hope that it continues to get colder and colder as we approach this winter. I saw my first woolly worm of the season and it was not only black but it was solid black even the skin of it was black and seeing that makes me feel rather happy for the winter to come. Also in the northern U.S and new england area i would prepare now bc it is about to get colder up there and i would not be supprised to see snow to.

the black one i saw had very little red skin, saw another white one yesterday. so far fall here in clearfield county pa hasnt been a very nice one, dark and dreary.  pine cones i found are about 6 1/2 to 7 inches long so is that bigger than normal?

  3. snowlover says:

Hollyr87 I guess the pinecone size depends on your area; but to me that’s HUGE!  Are you seeing a bunch of acorns also?  Do they appear larger than normal?  I’m a couple of states lower than you here in Va,  we have seen more acorns.  Our pinecones are usually about 4 inches long.  We’ll have to check with FatherFrost.

  4. hollyr87 says:

ya lots of acorns too.  pretty good size i would say.

The gfs model has a major storm coming by the end of next week with the jetstream plunging as far south as the gulf coast states. At the same time i noticed there was a huge ridge in the Gulf of Alaska and a strong ridge on the coast of Greenland. Get ready for the cold!

That is the best news I have heard all day and as far as a 7 inch long pine cone that is HUGH I mean that is the biggest pine cone I have ever heard of…lol btw how big are these pine cones in diameter bc that is taken into consideration to when dealing with these things. Also big acorns is good to and we are getting so close I am excited for the things to come this winter season. Also I would messure the diameter of the pine cones so that I can determine a little better of how big this thing actually is.

  7. ShawnM says:

I wonder how cold it is supposed to get for Missouri?

  8. hollyr87 says:

the pine cones, not being fully opened of course, at top the diameter is about 4 3/4.  then an inch from the tip is about 4 in diameter.  If i could get pictures to post i would put one up.
We have had our first freeze here too. got up it was only 23.  My apple tree did get apples this year found 3 on it!!

  9. Delstein says:

I saw a woolly worm on the side of a barn today. It was pretty high up, maybe 15 or 20 feet, so it was hard to get a good look at it. But, it did look like it was black with some orange undertones. I hope this means what it’s supposed to mean!

  10. fhutchens says:

Go to kyweathercenter.com and look at the forecast for next weeks storm. That is a HUGE trough in the east. that is going to produce some nasty weather if that euro model comes to be right! Notice the way the trough is tilted. That means that there is some blocking going on in greenland (:

  11. The Rickster says:

I’ve noticed the size of the pinecones here too. The ones in our yard are the usual size…but our neighbors is on steroids. Lol. Not to mention, I seen a Banana spider in 50 degree weather not too long ago. I was like…what? This thing is confused. Lol. Seen a flock of geese going south a a little back (about 5 days or so ago). We got quite a few ant mounds around here. Some big…some small.

  12. WeatherMan2 says:

Wow that is a huge pine cone, I have heard of them getting that big but that was when my papaw was a teenager and he is 72 now. So yeah that is a pretty good sign of winter you have there. Also the orange undertones on the woolly worm are usually tipical when you see a black one and it does mean a bad winter but if the undertone is black as well it means a worse winter than those that are black with an orange undertone. Also I will have to check out that map to see how bad it is showing for this area and I would like to thank fhutchens for posting that up for our viewers of the forum. Its still pretty amazing about the pine cones and I can’t wait to see what kind of winter a sign like that can bring us.

  13. hollyr87 says:

Well Weatherman2, my curiosity has really got me. Only time will tell now will just have to sit back and wait now. Big pine cones no walnuts.

  14. fhutchens says:

It seems like when we get our hopes up for a good cold fall and einter with early snow..we get let down. now they are saying there will be an Indian summer.

  15. WeatherMan2 says:

It is suppose to cool down quite a bit within the next couple of days and your right only time will tell. One thing is for sure us on the east coast are due for a cold one this year and I really hope that we get it and not have an indian summer. Also I hope that these cold fronts coming in from the artic and the west coast are strong enough to give us what we want. :D

  16. snowlover says:

What are the odds that Virginia (Rich) receive any snow otta this “Perfect Storm” senario?  I know it’s iffy at best; but a girl can’t help wondering!

  17. WeatherMan2 says:

I am not sure on that one yet bc the east coast has not cooled like the west but I have a feeling that very soon we will get a pretty good amount of snow here in the east. Also I do believe that the odds are pretty high and that we could see snow as early as mid to late november.

  18. snowlover says:

Sounds good to me WeatheMan2.  Thanks!

  19. WeatherMan2 says:

Your welcome and it looks like hurricane sandy will give some of us a taste of some early snow. I hope it keeps the temps down and btw i have not seen the leaves fall this early around this area for a long time so hopefully that can bring us some winter like weather a little earlier than usual.
