Winter Weather Signs

Posted By: WeatherMan2  Posted On: Aug 15th, 2012  Filed Under: Weather

I have been studying nature for the past month or so and have notice some things that could lead to a winter that we wont soon forget. Well let me get started by saying that I have not seen a single woolly worm this year, if any of you have seen one I would love to get your pictures and post of what color they are this year. Another thing foliage has started rather early here in South Shore, KY and I also checked the stems in the leaves and the tree has stopped feeding water to the leave which usually don’t start happening until the leaves start to fall. Also I have not seen any bees nests in the tree tops and I heard from some old time farmers that that usually means that they are building their hives in the trees which means that they are preparing for a very harsh winter. One of my friends has also noticed that most of the summer birds are already gone. Send me your folk lore and what you think about the upcoming winter. I think according to the signs that it is pointing to a bad winter and that the cold weather will make up for this hot summer.

Well send me your post and send me your weather pics and folk lore. It is gonna be an exciting year and I look forward for the upcoming winter season.

lol it was worth a shot anyway so what is the weather change in here and how does the foliage look in your areas discuss it on here and get some in depth weather talk. Also it is about that time to start getting fire wood and I would suggest that you do so before the month of november bc it is suppose to be bad.

My gran used to say that if the cat eats grass it will rain, but when my own cats eat grass it means I’ll recieve an odiferous gift on the carpet!

  3. hollyr87 says:

here in my area, central pa, the leaves are slowly turning. had some pretty cold nights.

  4. TheMaineMan says:

Locally, the wolly bear caterpillars “predict” a cold first half of winter, and a warm second half of winter.

  5. WeatherMan2 says:

In this area still no sign of the woolly worm and the leaves are changing pretty early this year so that is a good sign. Also the cold air is giving us high hopes for what this winter is going to be like and how we can prepare for it. Also there have been no walnuts on the trees which is pointing to a bad winter and I really hope that it is right. Also if you have some odd old time folk lore to tell share it on here so that we can have a good mix of different kinds of folk lore also I like to hear new things that me or some of the others on this blog may not have heard before. Oh yeah and according to the old time farmers this winter is going to be a pretty sizable one. In fact I believe that this one maybe one that dates back to some of the hard winters of the past such as the winter of 78′ where this area got over 2 ft. of snow so if you get anything from this blog it is to be prepared for what is to come.

  6. TheMaineMan says:

Why would you say that early changing leaves are a good sign? Just curious.

  7. WeatherMan2 says:

Well I heard that it leads to earlier season change

  8. WeatherMan2 says:

But I could be wrong…lol if I am could you help me out a bit so I am not feeding wrong information

  9. Leafpeeper says:

The scientists say that drought has caused many trees to turn early. My Gran always said really hot summer is always followed by really cold winter like mice follow grain!

  10. vegomatic says:

We had a HOT summer last year (2011) and a very mild winter here in Arkansas.  This summer was also hot….hoping for more cold this year…maybe even some snow.

  11. TheMaineMan says:

I just always heard that color in the leaves is mostly determined by the amount of rain received in the previous spring and summer, and also by the decreasing daylight (affected some by sunny vs. cloudiness). Maybe it does mean something about the coming winter, I don’t know.

Starting to see a lot of color here. Our peak foliage season starts next week.

  12. WeatherMan2 says:

Were still a little patchy here and your right it does have a lot to do with heat but in most cases if we have a lot of days that reach over 100 it tends to be a really cold winter. Also I have still yet to see any woolly worms around here in KY if anyone has seen any here in KY it would be most appreciated. Also if many of you may notice the animals have started putting on their winter coats and putting them on extra thick so keep a good eye on that. Thank you all for keeping this a successful post and lets keep it up bc as it gets colder were gonna have more to talk about.

So we have so much to talk about here first off it looks like the west is recieving some early snow this year and it also looks like the temps have taken a very big dive in most places. Also I have noticed that the leaves have started to change a bit faster bc of the weather change. Hopefully the place where you post pics is working now and we can get some pics on here of the beautiful foliage were experiencing all over the northern parts of the US. Any comments on the weather change or the temp change post here on the forum.

Well we certainly have a taste of fall.  Here in Virginia we had lows in the lower 40s and in some places to our west we had some temps in the 30s (brrr).  It’s raining here now, but earlier this morning the sky looked like snow.  I know I sound crazy; but you know that whiteish/grayish look to the sky/air.  Oh well, just a cold rain; but it sure feels good not to have to deal with humidity or 80 degree temperatures.  The leaves here are starting to change too, yet they seem almost dull.  I hope I’m wrong.  No burst of vibrant color yet.  Just a dull red or dirty yellow.  We didn’t have as much rain as we needed; but no major droughts to my knowledge in central Virginia.  I sure hope the leaves (perk) up!

  15. WeatherMan2 says:

Around here in KY i saw a tree that had the most vibrant red leaves fall from them and i agree the clouds did look like snow. From the looks of things we may not be to far from it i can’t wait to see the outcome of this winter. Oh and we have our first frost advisory tonight which is getting me pumped for the winter ro come. I know one thing it has not been this cold in october in quite a few years.

We have a lot of signs too as I posted up before for here in Kansas City Missouri, we have the leafs doing the same thing yours are. Our persimmon seeds locally here are ALL spoons in them, I think one had a knife. And everyone here is saying “Oh it’s going to be a bad one.” So much as people are swamping the stores early in preparation for a bad winter…some people are even running bets that we will get our first snow this month, or early early next….BUT only mother nature knows! She’s sure giving lots of signs it’s gonna be a bad one though! Thick animal furs, and also…I noticed today, we have no geese. None. I haven’t seen them since August…and that’s…well daddy says he hasn’t seen that since the 70′s O.o Said something about it being the “Great Storm of 1975.” Said a lot of snow fell, and tornadoes…Which…confuses me….but…I don’t think Daddy would lie about that. (My dad is from the upper midwest btw).

I can not tell if you can see the color on this much, but this is from FOX4KC from the article it posted up. I have myself seen solid black ones, which…I’ve never seen before…

  17. WeatherMan2 says:

That is great to hear i can’t wait for this winter and I do believe that it is still a little early to be seeing snow already in the west. That deffinitly struck me as odd and to have such cold temps this early in the season and we are already on a freeze advisory. i completely agree that this winter is gonna be one that we wont soon forget and that we will be telling are children and grandchildren about. Thank you for the info and I would deffinitly believe your father on this one.

  18. ShawnM says:

We had our first frost I believe on Monday morning. It was scattered but where it did frost it was very heavy it almost looked like snow.
