Woolly Worms!

Posted By: WeatherMan2  Posted On: Aug 16th, 2012  Filed Under: Weather

Has anyone seen any woolly worms this year. Send me your thoughts on the topic bc I see this being a big convo this year bc I personally have seen none. Not sure what that means but I have heard from older farmers that that is not good bc it usually resulted in a really bad winter but it is good news for all you snow lovers like me out there.

I have yet to see any either here in IL but for us its still a little early for them. I enjoy keeping data on them so I do hope they show up soon!

  2. Chris Medley says:

i seen two solid black wooly worms this past week and seen birds flying down south too

  3. pearlss says:

Haven’t seen any woolly’s yet. Usually start seeing them in the next couple of weeks though. Will be watching for them.

Black is good to hear and thank you all for doing this for me it will help me see a better picture of what this winter is going to be like. Also the birds flying south is a plus I hope that nature keeps playing in our favor so we can get that winter we have been waiting for.

  5. fhutchens says:

In Southern West Virginia the wolly worms are solid black

  6. nashville_gal says:

I live in Nashville TN.. Seen solid black very furry wooly worm on my sidewalk Friday – Aug 17th 2012

  7. PattyPooh3 says:

I’m curious…what does the color of the wooly worms mean?

  8. KatD-Mo. says:

I havent seen a one in central missouri. we were in northern iowa a for a few day (last week) didn’t see one there or between there and here.
It must be too early? keep in mind Issac gave most of us out here our first honest rain of the summer. Even the bugs have had a hard summer.

  9. WeatherMan2 says:

    black means a bad winter
    brown means a mild winter
mix means times of severe and times of mild winter
and I heard that if you see a white woolly worm it points to having a blizzard sometime in the winter

  10. PattyPooh3 says:

Thanks for the answer and I am praying that there be TONS of black ones and possibly a few white!  I am SO tired of our long, HOT year so far!!  The white stuff would be MOST welcome!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. snowlover says:

I agree PattyPooh3.  We sure could use some snow here too.  Sick of the insects!  Especially the ticks!
