You are right about that Pearls, Atleast in NJ in the early 90's, we still got snow on Christmas and it was snowing pretty regularly. Then it really started to die off about 6 or 7 years ago.

We've had 2 good periods of snow in the last few years though (with the exception of LAST YEAR *cringe*)... One was a blizzard in February of 2010 which fell on my wedding day and then there was "snowmageddon" in the 2010-2011 winter. A blizzard that dumped 29" in December of 2010 & we got another 10" inches from another blizzard in early 2011, and then another 20 inches from a third one in early 2011. One of those storms caused NYC to declare a state of emergency and it pretty much shut down my entire town. My husband and I had to walk 12 blocks in the middle of that storm in full snow gear & had to use an umbrella to shield us from the wind. It took us about 3 hours because we could barely walk or see- we got to help some people out of the snow and even though we were miserable, we were still having fun- it was probably one of the best memories I have. Now THAT is my kind of winter!

Anyway, I saw a video by Steven Boyle (I don't really know much about him) but he says that one of the main storm tracks this year is going to be the driving force for these winter storms and North Carolina is right in that path. I don't know the name of the storm track but it's the one that starts in Canada dips into the gulf of mexico then swings back up the through the east coast if there is a negative NAO. here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQLRkkSpAF4

Well, regardless of the maps, you get what you get. I know in New Jersey, we had what I called "drought" years. Major snow storms all winter until the late 70's. Then? it kind of rolled off. Yes we continued to have snow, but only 1 or 2 good storms a year. Then around the early 90's it started up again. I remember talking to one of my brothers who still lived in NJ (I had moved to Georgia in '89) and it was either 91 or 92, they had back-to-back-to-back storms and they ran into spring. At one point from all the storms he had 5 feet of snow in his yard! These past years? not so much.

Basically, if you pay attention to patterns, weather roller coasters. Here in NC they've said it's been some years since they've had a really good winter. My husband, who grew up in NC, says he remembers winters where they had some really major storms resulting in them being out of power for days and a week at a time. That was in the 60's and early 70's. Now a-days? Not so much. According to the old timers around here, NC is about due for it to start up again.

I hope they are right. We'll see.

I do hope that the weather forecast for the Iowa area is accurate for a mild and dry winter. Winters in Iowa can be bitterly cold and windy in Jan. and Feb. I am looking at knee replacement surgery and I need a break this winter and not have to deal with bitterly cold weather and even less snow the better. I hope you will post any changes that 'might' occur in the next few months! So far, the forecast for my area is pleasing news. Thanks!
