We’ve had 2 good periods of snow in the last few years though (with the exception of LAST YEAR *cringe*)… One was a blizzard in February of 2010 which fell on my wedding day and then there was “snowmageddon” in the 2010-2011 winter. A blizzard that dumped 29″ in December of 2010 & we got another 10″ inches from another blizzard in early 2011, and then another 20 inches from a third one in early 2011. One of those storms caused NYC to declare a state of emergency and it pretty much shut down my entire town. My husband and I had to walk 12 blocks in the middle of that storm in full snow gear & had to use an umbrella to shield us from the wind. It took us about 3 hours because we could barely walk or see- we got to help some people out of the snow and even though we were miserable, we were still having fun- it was probably one of the best memories I have.  Now THAT is my kind of winter!

Anyway, I saw a video by Steven Boyle (I don’t really know much about him) but he says that one of the main storm tracks this year is going to be the driving force for these winter storms and North Carolina is right in that path. I don’t know the name of the storm track but it’s the one that starts in Canada dips into the gulf of mexico then swings back up the through the east coast if there is a negative NAO. here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQLRkkSpAF4

Basically, if you pay attention to patterns, weather roller coasters. Here in NC they’ve said it’s been some years since they’ve had a really good winter. My husband, who grew up in NC, says he remembers winters where they had some really major storms resulting in them being out of power for days and a week at a time. That was in the 60′s and early 70′s. Now a-days? Not so much. According to the old timers around here, NC is about due for it to start up again.

I hope they are right. We’ll see.
