We were here for only part of last winter. We moved here in Feb. and everyone said that it was a very unusual winter with hardly any snow. We had one cold spell that dumped about 6″ or so, but that was it. We have no idea of what a normal winter here is like and just wondering how this year is going to turn out. So far, I would say we have a half inch of snow on the ground from this weekend and temps are supposed to get back into the upper 40′s to almost 50 according to weather.com and accuweather.com Is that normal? I would have thought we would have more snow on the ground by now!

A typical winter sees a lot of lake effect snow, with about 100 inches for the whole winter, but some inland areas see 20-30 inches more. But, yes, the scenario you described is fairly normal for this time of year, as the snow season is just starting up. Be prepared for a lot of snow.
Thanks. We just had no idea of what was normal or not given that last year was such a warm winter.
i think december will be warmer than average and couple cool shots and thats about it average 30s and 40s and maybe some majore ice storms at most. january will be slighty milder than normal and the febuary will be warmer than normal in 2013 in the late winter.
