February has been nuts this year… what was forecast to be 3-6 inches has turned into another 12 inches and still falling… on top of the existing snowpack from the February 9 blizzard. February alone has brought 38 inches of snow, bringing my seasonal total up to 72 inches. My annual average is 81 inches (February average is 20 inches)… but it has felt like so much with all of this snow in such a short time. More snow (and some rain) are forecast later in the week, possibly several inches before changing to rain and making a slush-fest…
Spring isn’t too far away I suppose… but it’s still February and a lot can happen. March averages 12 inches and April 6, which means that 90+ inch season isn’t out of the question. But with much of the snow being heavy wet snow (except for Feb 9 blizzard which was very light at a 30:1 ratio) there is a lot of moisture… if the wet snowy pattern continues and we see a 100+ season with most of this falling late in the winter… then hopefully there won’t be any flooding concerns come melting season. Things were slightly on the dry side last year so some extra moisture wouldn’t hurt, and of course things could really slow down after next week. I suppose that time will tell.
In the meantime, I’ve just got a whole lot of snow laying around. Snowball fight, anybody?

Yeah, we had 2 feet of snow over just the last week here in Palmer Lake, Colorado, and that includes this last storm that hit today, dumped about 12 to 14 inches, and it’s even still flurrying outside, and it has snowed lightly for 4 days straight, and with snother storm moving in for Tuesday into Wednesday which could put down a couple to several inches of snow on top
of what has already fallen, it means good hope for some significant drought relief, and I sm crossing my fingers dor a wet spring like February has been, hope is still alive for the Rockies
Yeah hopefully the snow can help to relieve your drought. The key is to have moisture present once the ground thaws… obviously water on frozen ground just runs off. But the more snow around, the better chance.
The prediction for Wednesday/Thursday is now 6-10 inches, which already takes into account that rain is expected to mix in at times. This could bring me very close to my average annual snowfall, which would mean anything in March/April would put be above.
How about that, 5 more inches of snow on top of the 12 inches of snow we got from Sunday’s storm, now this is what I like to call a big spark of hope, and it is still snowing out here now, in fact, it is possible we could get another 2-4 inches on top of that before the night is over with, and great news for everyone, just read an article that mentioned about this blocking pattern continuing into March, which means more opportunities for storms to continue tracking over similar areas through at least the 2nd to 3rd week of March, I say bring on all this great moisture, this is fantastic news, does everyone else agree?
most of us have been above average for precipitation in February, let’s hope we can keep it up, especially in the drought affected areas.
we’ve had a total of about 1 foot. I’m stuck home again today. bummer. not.
its all been snow heavy with moisture. with a little bit of rain. the cell towers were out, satalite comes and goes and the power was out for about an hour (shew!)
my suv is stuck at the end of the drive way.
hubby and plow truck ended up in a LARGE ditch, more like one tree short of a creek. he used the plow to push a tree off the road. it took a roll back, back hoe and a 4 x 4 to get him out. this snow is SLICK.
Total of about 6 inches from this latest storm, so, now we have a total of about 16-18 inches on the ground, with a few drifts that are 3-4 feet or higher in some places.
Made for some of the most beautiful pictures I have ever taken.
We are still way below average in terms of what is normal, by now we typically have close to 80 inches, with an average of about almost 50 inches more between March and April, so far this year, about 50 inches have fallen, so we have a long way to go before we are finally caught up to normal.
This stormy period, however, has been a blessing to us.
Let’s just hope it will keep this up and not return to very dry again.
I was a little disappointed with the almanac for missing the two huge snow storms we’ve had in the midwest. Missouri is hardly ever mentioned in the predictions but it seems with the magnitude of the storms it would have been an obvious prediction.
nubnqn,
I rarely see any forcasts made for missouri. We are at a crossroads for weather and no one can predict it. The big weather agency’s prefer to ignor us. To ignor means they wont be wrong. The weather channel people spend more time standing in front of missouri than any other state. If they HAVE to mention missouri, they do it in as few words as possible.
Our weather comes from the Gulf, the south west and the north west, all at once. We are the crossroads of weather. We cant be predicted.
Well Howdy to All,
I am so glad to hear your stories of SNOW, it has not snowed this much here in NW MI since I was a kid. Lake levels are still very dangerously low and it would have to rain and snow a month of Sundays and I do not know if that would even help!
With Spring right around the corner, I was up in Suttons Bay yesterday, and we have more snow here where I am on the back end of West Bay (Grand Traverse) than there, it (the roads) was looking like just dirty, yah know, from all the traffic and whatnot on M-22 North. The 45th parrellel is 10 miles from here, if that is any indication of where I am. The water on Lake Michigan is way out there, about a good 1/4 to 1/2 mile from where the shore used to be. There have been some articles trying to cover that fact up!!!! And that is a whole ‘nother topic, what with companies taking the fresh water for bottled water.
Sapporo, Kat D, Maine Man, and all others, a big YEAH! FINALLY!!! We got some PRECIPITATION!!!! Umm, I totally agree with you Maine Man about having the moisture once the ground thaws, we are sitting in over 12′ pile ups from plow guys, and the average is about 5 to 6′!!! It still has to keep on coming, because if we just get a warm up and slush fest and it goes to HOT IMMEDIATELY like last year in March, things will not be good, anywhere!!! Oh, Sapporo, I was reading a post of yours on some other site (was looking for the total snowfall here so far) and the freaking heat and no rain last summer, YIKES!!!! I think I was saying something about how the bathroom shower curtain holder parts just FELL OFF THE WALL last year, that kind a hot is UGLY!!! Give me cold and snowy anyday, you can always get warm, with a sweater, sweetie, pet, you name it, but keep that damn heat and bugs outa here!!! How much snow did we get here, in Traverse City, MI?
Kat, those crazies on the weather channel, actors predicting something, LOL I used to LOVE jim cantori, not so much anymore, i like vivian tho. what is the prediction for summer over here, hope it snows till the end of JULY!!! For awhile, it was snowing everyday, most beautiful thing!!!!! I have seen some stunning photos also, well, I have made myself hungry, gots to go get some chows, right now the wind chill is 6 and it can just stay that way. No snow that I can see coming our way right now, only have forecast till Wednesday.
Talk at ya all soon!!!
Our summer should come a little slower than the last couple years. Tho it looks like it will end up as hot and dry as the last 2 yrs. bummer. We ended up with 20.5 inches total, of snow. Today is our first day of full sun in about 2 weeks. We shall have snow smush. Hopefully it will add to some ponds and lakes. Its melting slow enough that it IS going into the ground too. I’m glad of that. Hubby did some major dirt work for a company last summer. The ground was dry as powder down to 20 feet below. Could have been dry farther down but that was as far down as they went. A lot of ponds and lakes got drained and re-dug this last summer. It was a risk many took. If we get enough moisture this winter/spring, those resivoirs will hold more water for the stock.
Every time I see someone watering their yard I want to scream at them. What a waste, they’ll wish they had that water in their homes way too soon.
I’ve only taken a few photos, I’m just enjoying the views too much to stop and put a camera in my face.
Snow on, I say!!!
