For us, I felt like last winter was very cold, but not snowy. Nature for the past two years has indicated a snowy, good winter, but then the first year we got Irene, and last year, we got Sandy. So I am thinking that nature was just preparing for both of those storms because after both tropical events, we got huge snowstorms. After that, not as much as I would like. So I am hoping that this year is good and snowy for us- of course, I am the only one around here who thinks take that! Thank goodness for this forum with like-minded people! :D
I will keep my eyes open for other signs and share them as I find them :)

I'm just hoping for a 2009-10-like winter season again! Last year was slightly better than the two before; yet we still only had a few ground covers but nothing much in acculmulations. I live in central Virginia.
The August of 2009 we had a few THICK FOGGY mornings where there were still fog at 10:00 am. That was one of the snowiest winters we've had around here in about 15 years! I loved it!

I hope so to! Aside from the brief warm ups last winter I liked the winter season, because we had three major snow events in february and march of this year and they all contained thundersnow. There was more thundersnow in the first and third storm with just a little bit in the second storm. We had about 10 inches of snow with the first and third storm we may have had somewhat less accumulation with the second storm.
It was very interesting having thundersnow happen three times in a row. I hope I get more of that this upcoming winter season.

I think it means a cold start and a cold finish with a warm-up in between. Keep an eye out. Next month pay attention to how many foggy mornings there are in August. This gives a better nature-clue as to snow frequency.
