It seems so long ago for me that when Winter came, Winter stayed. It was always cold. Snowy. Long. The rain/snow line well below DC Metro. Factoring in other dynamics for a snowy winter, Nao, the Northern Atlantic Oscillation, is a rather large player in making or breaking the Winter Season

"NAO" plays a very large role in who gets what in the ways of Old man winter. When "NAO" is in a positive phase in winter, the cold is bound. When "NAO" is in a negative phase, the flood gates open and cold air pours out.

Since the early Eighties, NAO has been in a positive phase during the winter seasons. There were years where NAO went to the negative side. In which two memorable snow storms are remembered. 1993 and 1996. Two years where NAO was negative throughout those winters.

For the Mid Atlantic Region, the Winter of 2007-2008 will be most interesting to watch!

The cold over the Great Lakes is now over the plains/rokies.
