Haven't seen any wooly bears in S.C. I've cut open a few persimmons as I have shown in the past however. Most are spoons.

Some natural signs to look for:

Nuts being gathered heavily by squirrels and such. Also if the other animals forage heavily.

Bark on the trees - tighter and more dense on the wood.

Hair on outside animals getting thicker and heavier.

Spiderwebs being strung larger than normal and higher than normal.

Bees and Wasps- depending on how high they build their nests is how much snow you can expect. Also if they build their homes inside a home, is a bad sign.

Hope that helps some.

Spiderwebs are a-go.

Squarrels gathering nuts are a-go. (complete with bushy tails).

Trees are dropping alotta nuts this year. A freinds yard is covered in them. Thats a-go.

Alot of trees still have their leaves, while some have honestly lost close to half of them. Kinda odd to see really.

Fruit bareing trees are bareing alotta fruit.

And probably the one of...if not the most famous natural sign...that good ole' persimmon seed. If you get a spoon type shape within' a persimmon seed, winter will be snowy. If you get a fork type shape...you'll get a mild winter. If you get a knife like shape, you get a winter with 'cutting' cold.

Of course...folklore has alotta controversy behind it, BUT, I have said this once, and I'll say it again. Befor there was radar, 15 day out forecasts, and 'current conditions', there was nature. Take what you will of it. Folk and weatherlore maynot be accurate all the time...or even half the time...but its still interesting, and fun to see what every little saying could lead to.
