It’s no secret that the blues can come on strong at this time of year, when days are shorter and cold weather keeps many of us cooped indoors much of the time. While serious bouts of seasonal sadness may point to a larger problem, and should be discussed with your doctor, minor cases of the “winter blahs” can often be dispelled with a few small changes around the house.
When light is at a premium, color can go a long way toward warming things up. Spice up your home’s interior by adding rich oranges and reds. If you don’t like those colors, warmth can come from colors you might not expect, such as combinations of chocolate brown and pale blue. A splash of green can also sooth the soul, serving as a reminder of spring and the great outdoors.
While a fresh coat of paint is always nice, you don’t have to pull out the rollers and drop cloths to warm up your home with color. Fabrics, such as throws, pillows, and cushion covers, are an easy, and often inexpensive way to brighten things up. Putting cozy, warm throws over your sofa and chairs will not only add color to your room, but are also convenient for when you need to warm up on a chilly winter’s night.
For a more modern touch, head to your local fabric store, and look for a bolt of cloth with an exciting pattern you like. Buy a yard or two, and frame it, like a piece of art.
