Next time you admire the beautiful colors of fall leaves, grab a shovel. Autumn is the perfect time to plant trees. Here’s a list that can help you decide which trees to plant. It’s based on leaf color. For example, if you like red autumn leaves, try Galax. What about yellow or golden leaves? Try Gingko. Keep in mind that weather can affect the leaves’ color, so actual colors may change yearly.Autumn Tree Leaf Colors: Red Autumn Leaves
- Galax, Tallowtree, Oak varieties, Red Maple, Sassafras and Sweetgum
- White Oak, Silver Maple, Common Chokecherry, and Bigtooth Aspen
- Gingko, White Mulberry, American Chestnut, American Basswood, Yellow-Poplar, Sweet Birch, Sweetgum, Sassafras, Pignut Hickory and Quaking Aspen
Multiple Autumn Leaf Colors
- Some tree species such as Sugar Maple may have leaves of varying hues on the same tree at the same time.
- According to Dr. Robert Bardon, Extension Specialist in North Carolina, “Some of the most startling color combinations are found in the leaves of red and sugar maples, sassafras, sumac, blackgum, sweetgum, Northern red oak, scarlet oak, sour-wood, and dogwood.”
