Simple Cures for Mild Constipation
Just because you’re a “regular” guy or gal, doesn’t mean you won’t get hit with a bout of constipation. The fact is constipation occasionally affects everyone.
When you are constipated your bowels don’t move on schedule and crampy abdominal pain may be present. .
All said, it’s an unpleasant experience.
While a change in diet sometimes triggers a case of simple constipation, more often than not, food is not a factor. Common causes include a change in time zone, a heightened emotional state, or increased stress level.
The most effective cures include returning to a set sleep/wake regimen, increasing fluid intake, and adding bulk (fiber, vegetables, and fruit) to the diet. Pears, grapes, oranges, papaya, figs, and bran are all usually effective. An over-the counter bowel stimulant is the next step. Enemas are rarely used today.
A symptom complex of constipation or alternating constipation and diarrhea, known as irritable bowel syndrome, is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems seen by physicians. In the past few years several new medications have become available for intractable symptoms however a trial of high fiber cereal, (more than 5 grams of fiber per serving) is usually effective and should be tried before taking medication.
