The other day, after my seven-year-old son arrived home
from school, he and I went out beneath the giant oaks
in our yard and played a little ball. Batting practice for him, aiming-at-a-small-strike-zone
practice for me. "Dad, can you learn to throw already?"
has become a
common refrain.
We lined up home plate just in front of a hole he had dug in the ground a week
before. A pretty deep hole, if I might say. He and his sister (age five) were
going to China of course. My wife thought it was funny one night when she spilled
the remains of Chinese takeout around the hole, clumps of rice now mixed in with
the lawn. "Looks like some folks from China must have visited in the middle
of the night," she told the kids in the morning. It's a barrel of laughs
around
here.
