Readers' Good Ol' Cast Iron Story

Using Granny's Skillets

I have all my granny's cast iron skillets. She used them all the time; that’s all she had, and she used them for 60 years. I have used them for the past five myself. She passed them to me, as I was the only one of the grandkids to still believe in the old-fashioned ways.

The skillets are non-stick, as they say. I have had the newfangled ones that say non-stick and no oil needed. I have used them and don't like 'em. I’d rather have my granny skillets. I have all sizes, too: the chicken-cooking one, the cornbread one, the fried-tater one, etc. Nothing better to cook in! I can even cook fried eggs and grilled cheese without them sticking. Who says you have to have the newfangled pans for all that?

I love the newsletter, by the way. And I use the Almanac all the time. I am a firm believer in the signs for doing things. My granny taught me that when I was a little girl. You plant by the signs, and you kill hogs by the signs.
