SAVANNAH, Ga. (Aug. 14, 2008) - More and more Americans are hopping on scooters as record-high gas prices cause sales of SUVs to plummet and make us think twice about every trip to the grocery store or bank.

The resourceful living experts at Farmers' Almanac say scooters have long been popular in Asian and European countries for their ability to counter traffic congestion and gas prices, which are more than double those in the United States. Fuel-efficient scooters are available in three classes to fit various lifestyle and transportation needs, and drivers can customize with different wheel sizes to help respond safely to terrain.

Basic urban transport, the smallest class, is perfect for city driving because it can reach 30 to 40 mph while getting 80 to 100 miles per gallon. All-around city scooters allow driver and passenger to achieve speeds as high as 65 mph, while still getting 60 to 80 mpg. Maxi scooters keep driver and passenger comfortable on a cross-country road trip at freeway speeds that still allow 50 to 70 mpg.

Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses teach valuable defensive driving skills and help new riders determine what type of scooter will best fit their needs. While it may be tempting to throw on a bathing suit and scoot to the beach, safety gear is extremely important when riding. Long pants, sturdy ankle-high boots, a leather or specially padded motorcycle jacket, eye protection and helmet are recommended for even casual scooter riders.

When buying, shop at a reputable motorcycle or scooter dealer that carries established name brands with one- or two-year parts and service warranties and qualified mechanics. Test-drive as many scooters as possible to ensure you're getting one that meets your needs.

More information about scooters can be found in the 2009 Farmers' Almanac, on sale Aug. 26. To pre-order the Almanac and get tips on sustainable living from the experts, visit www.FarmersAlmanac.com.
