Working It Out

On my way to the farm today, I thought, “I don’t really feel like doing this today.” But then I realized I have had that same thought on other days when going to the farm, but once I get there, there is always work to be done that keeps my busy and I always end… Continue Reading »

PLOWING ALONG

Today on the farm I made my first notable mistake. Charles asked me to harvest the remaining Swiss chard. He wanted it to come up so he could plow that area. “Do you know where the chard is?” he asked. I didn’t. “You’ll see where I was plowing before, it’s to the right of that.”… Continue Reading »

Charles in Charge

I went on vacation last week and somehow the farm survived without me. Just kidding, my three hours a week do not keep the farm afloat! They’ve survived without me thus far (over seventeen years and counting) and probably didn’t even notice my absence last week. The real person who keeps the show running is… Continue Reading »

Speed Farming

I was hoping to make some new friends while working on the farm. I have had several occasions where I have worked side by side with someone for 1, 2, or even 3 hours and happily chatted away while working. I always assumed I’d see the person again next week; after all if Saturday morning… Continue Reading »

Good Weeding

There are many similarities but in a lot of ways the farm has advantages because it’s just so much more land and so many more people working it. For example, on any given week, there are several types… Continue Reading »

Making Friends

From Guest Blogger Gina Sampaio, a Community Supported Agriculture Member. I showed up at the farm last Saturday morning ready to get my three hours for the week in. Another newbie showed up at the same time and we decided to work together in the greenhouse transplanting seedlings. I had brought my iPod and headphones… Continue Reading »

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
