Stormy Weather for the Southern States

Stormy Weather for the Southern States

There are two seasons of copious precipitation in the Southern United States. The interval from January through March is wet because storms emerge out of the Gulf of Mexico and move northward through the Central and Eastern States (providing the necessary moisture for considerable frozen precipitation over northern areas).

August and September make up the second rainy season, due to a combination of afternoon and evening thunderstorm activity (popping up in the heat of the day) and tropical cyclone activity, which peaks in early September. October is usually the driest and clearest month of the year.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
